It's really not all that big of a deal---lots of practice is all it takes....

Ive been playing guitar since I was 11 years old. I am almost 51 now...It really is just muscle memory which came from many many years of practice as a kid....

    LOL. I tried this once.
I decided right then that style was not gonna be the way I was gonna able to do it.
I know with intense practice it's possible but I just have too many other things to learn and practice.

I don't "butterfly" it like Ed does, I rest my pinky and ring finger on the body of the guitar as kind of an anchor.

This video was a joke after I read a review of one of Van Halen's shows where the author talked about Ed's "Impressive two hand tremolo picking" so pay the end no mind, but there's a good shot of how I do it at the beginning. Probably not quite as fast as Ed, I don't think my chops were really up when I did this but you get the point. To me having an anchor point really helps to keep your pick on the strings.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

As Iíve gotten older I actually find itís easier to trem pick like Ed does than resting my hand on the guitar. My hand gets more tired that way, I know that sounds weird. I also find I seem to have more control when I do it the way Ed does.

I've tried it that way because I think it looks cooler but I feel like I have less control of my pick hand.

Hell, I can't really do it that well anymore even with an anchor but I think that's mostly due to a lack of consistent playing.

Me too, Show. That's the only way I can have some control. And that's only one the high E, really.
Even that way I haven't practiced as much as should have.

That I actually did experience, Brett. I didn't tense up or get tired as much trying Ed's style. But no control whatsoever.
I just figured this is gonna take months. I can somewhat do it my way, so, I'll come back to this, maybe, someday.

To me, it's the most insane and counter-reason approach though it looks amazing. I just can't get my head around it so have left it be rather than put in hours and hours of retraining for what looks good but is an inefficient picking technique. As I am a finger and thumb picker (rather than wrist action like most) switching to major muscles (and more muscles) and greater rotation/movement is uneconomical compared to moving the thumb and finger an incremental distance back and forth.

So I won't do it and even if I wanted to, I can't do it LOL!

Ditto. Like, 100% agree with every sentence. My lead picking is more in my index/thumb fingers as well (unless I'm going for big showmanship), so that's where my tremolo picking is strongest. Ed's technique looks cool but just doesn't mesh with the rest of my playing mechanics.

This is one of those things that only matters if you are trying to look like Ed while playing. To me, if you just want to sound like Ed, then do whatever works, right?

It's definitely a weird motion, but unlike all of Ed's other playing idiosyncrasies, this isn't one that I look and think "that's awesome--I have to learn that!." It's more like "well, that's weird...but that's why he's Ed."
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Agreed. And I think a big factor is him holding the pick with his thumb and middle finger as opposed to his index finger.

I think Jedi basically said the same thing, LOL...

AFAIK, Edward switched to holding the pick with his thumb and middle finger, sometime around the second album, when everybody was expecting, and/or demanding that he do more of that excellent tapping thing, that everybody loved so much, and consequently was paying so many more bills...
He had found his meal ticket.
Otherwise, before that time, he held it just like the rest of us slobs.

He used to point out in early interviews, how he ever so cleverly tucked his pick in his middle finger joints, so he could do that excellent tapping thing, with his free index finger.

    Woah....exxxcellent

    That's Hollywood, baby
Why behave in public...if you're livin' on a playground !
