I loved his tone "brownsound" during the six pack. When he went to the Ernie Ball Musicman I didn't like his tone. That is my two cents.

It would be hard to pick just one favorite from all 5 of those categories. I will say that Hear About It Later checks all of those boxes.

Pound for pound, note to note, I don't think VH gets any better than IASR/Growth and HAIL. But you know that already.

I sometimes wish that GGB had been cut during the 'Warning sessions with that brown tone. OMG, what a monster it would've been. It's already a monster on '84, probably the best track on the record, but if it'd been on FW instead of SS....egad.

You know you have a damn near perfect hard rock record when a track like SS is the 'weakest' track on the album. Holy heck, Batman.

I dont dislike it, and always liked the fact that both Ed and Al had different tones on every album, but his EBMM period is probably my least favorite of his tones.

Light Up The Sky is another one of my all-time favorite performances by EVH. He absolutely rages on that song and the breakdown is so tasty.

    All good, and that's cool.
For me? His recent (ADKOT, Tokyo Live) tone is my least favorite. I loved the EBMM years, and I loved the prior homemade/slap 'em together axes. The Peavey Wolfgang's were cool as well, yet even then, I could hear a change...

Eddie is Eddie....sometimes I don't care for the songs after 84..but the guitar playing has always been out of this world. By 84, I was moving further into the Metallica type playing with the EVH lead points mixed in. So I missed the actual Sammy era.... Having went back and listened to Everything Eddie has done, I see a man who was on fire all the time. Even VH 3 was kick ass, Catherine, Twister, all that stuff is unbelievable....

I love Ed's tone on WACF and FW. I also like the tone Ed achieved with his EBMM set-up. Two different tones but they each made sense for the music he was writing at the time.

Any song that has Eddie playing guitar brings pure enjoyment to my ears. Of course I like some better than others. Beat It for example. Once Eddie kicks in ..pure enjoyment. If I had to pick a period it would be 78-84. Eddie was untouchable during that period. No one even came close in my opinion. The whole world was trying to figure out how the hell this 22 year old kid could play a guitar like that.

Valerie Bertinelli's favorite Van Halen song …

    How awesome is that intro?

Eddie never sounded better than the Balance era IMO.

    His guitar tone is perfect.
    Eddie Van Halen in 2012:

"ESQ: What are you going to do with all the material that you wrote with Sammy Hagar?

EVH: Oh, I hadn't thought about that. That's some great music. They're just on vacation, maybe. They're off to college and they're going their own way. Who knows?"

Intro is the best snippet of Eddie Van Halen that exists. The song itself is one of the weakest on VH2.
