Which song has your favorite EVH guitar performance?

    Easy call for me …

"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth

"The truth sounds like hate to those who hate the truth" - Todd Wagner

"Women and Children First ... The REAL Van Halen III"

His early approach was more of a riff based approach and more aggressive. Probably having something to do with him being under the age of 30. He definitely had more of a gunslinger attitude toward the instrument, but he still played parts that fit the song, for example the solo in Jamie's Cryin', the interlude in Little Guitars, the Women in Love solo, etc.

I think his post 1985 playing was a more song based approach that saw the focus shift to more chordal structures with less riff based material. The solos didn't seem to be nearly as off the cuff and seemed more thought through. Its a more mature approach to the instrument which fits the fact that he was no longer a 20 something kid. He could still lay down a barn burner when he wanted to like SOI, and there were some riff based tunes like Amsterdam and Judgement Day, but the fire was definitely turned down a notch.

My preference is for the early approach because it appeals to me more, but he still was a better player than almost anyone in the second act.
That's a pretty good summation. His playing 78-84 is what put him in the discussion of the greatest guitarist ever.

Gosh, that's a shocker. I'm not sure you know there's other songs on VH1.

Would you like me to rank all 11 of them for you?

Squalen, what is your favorite EVH guitar performance? I am genuinely curious. I am guessing it is probably from Fair Warning. PCTS maybe?

I hate the damn song but Amsterdam is actually some of Edís best work. Hard as fuck to play.

Default Eddie Van Halen vs Eddie Van Halen

    For me

Mean Street is pure Ed, the intro to the last note, other guitarists May play it, but you know when itís being imitated versus when itís Ed

We used to do it instrumentaly, before we had a singer. Some tough riffs, yet lots of fun to jam on.

I believe you already know the answer to that, but it depends on whether you are talking about intro, outro, solo, or rhythm, or just overall songwriting.

Mean Street has that otherworldly intro, and even the song itself is choke full of great stuff! Tone? Obviously. Groove? Yup. Wicked sounding riffs that are often accented with pinch harmonics or pedal effects? Indeed! A blazing solo? Check. Wonderful breakdown with dynamics? Oh hell yeah. An outro that is ripe with ad libbed soloing and a tight yet loose feel? Affirmative!

Panama is my favorite VH song, and there are several runners up for the second spot. Mean Street is one of those superb candidates.
