Here is a interview I've never seen before. But, I am usually the last to find out stuff anyways.

Lots of writing on the wall in this interview. Tongue and cheek, but very subliminal stuff, or at least that is how it appears to me....

I like the sounds at the end of "Baluchitherium". Back then I had a crazy-loud car stereo system and would just crank it all the way up when they came on. It seems like something Ed probably didn't spend too much time on but was interesting nevertheless.

The whole album was great for the time period, IMO. I loved it.

Sammy obviously got over his "embarrassment" of writing juvenile/sexist lyrics with Up For Breakfast.

I picked up the album both on CD and LP on release day, played the CD a few times all the way through over the next week or so and shelved it. Pretty telling that the non-album B-side "Crossing Over" is imo the best song from that period. Honestly, I had become pretty disinterested in VH by this time but wanted to give the album a chance but it just didn't connect with me aside from maybe "Don't Tell Me."

I didn't even plan on seeing them that tour, but when they played a pair of shows at the LA Forum, a co-worker went the first night and raved about it, I decided to go the next night. I was working in Torrence at the time maybe 20 minutes from the Forum so it was easy to drive over there after work, hunt down a decent seat from a scalper and catch the show.

I will say this, the audience was super loud and into the show, far moreso than any Hagar era show I'd previously seen. But the band seemed kind of sluggish through the set, there was zero camaraderie between Sammy and Eddie and about 2/3rds through the show, Eddie seemed to be struggling and sweating profusely. It all culminated during Eddie's solo spot when he was trying to play Cathedral, he was having some sort of issue with his guitar, abruptly threw it down on the stage with a loud crash/feedback and spent about a full minute plus bitching out his guitar tech onstage before pulling it together and finishing his solo and the rest of the show. I don't even think he joined the rest of the band for their end-of-show bows and Hagar came out by himself afterwords and did a short PSA about driving home drunk. I left that show thinking this was probably the last time I'd see the band, at least with Hagar, it was just a really weird vibe.

Last Summer, I pulled out the vinyl and gave it a spin for shits n' giggles and wound up liking it a bit more than I remembered, but it's still my least favorite VH studio album.

I probably have some hearing loss from listening to that album 2x2. Too damn loud, too often. It's such a polished, full, balanced (yup I threw it out there) album. Throw in Crossing Over and it was one hell of a way for Sammy to depart the band.

The wait for the album was the most anxious ever personally. It was originally coming out in October ‘94 called “The Club”. My local record store got the whole tracklisting sent to them in November under the album title “The Seventh Seal”, so I was expecting that as the title, but when December came around the title had changed again to “Balance”.
I hated, and still do to this day the cover art, and the back cover with Sammy in the background was just odd. I had a eerie feeling from the release day this could be Sammys last album.

I said in another post, I cringed when I first heard Can't Stop Loving You. Big Fat Money and Not Enough were kind of in that cringy-forgettable range too. I was so disappointed when I saw them on Letterman and they played Not Enough. Carnal Knowledge was so heavy with all those hard-driving songs. Then Balance comes out after quite a wait, and was filled with so much softness. But all was forgiven with the inclusion of Amsterdam. Oh man those riffs... That was some badass shit. So I pretty much like Balance for Amsterdam and Don't Tell Me--that's a cool one too. Those two songs were haymakers.

For those of you who cite Balance as your least favorite VH album, have you completely forgotten about VH III? If so, please tell me how I, too can completely forget about it.

I'm with you, yeah, it's a ballad so "rockers only" won't like it, but as a song it's extremely well done and is my favorite of ALL their ballads. It's interesting, which I can't say about Can't Stop Loving You.

Yeah, it's weird, I feel like BFM is a song I should like way more than I do, maybe it's the vocals. I need to go listen again. I don't dislike it at all, just kind of neutral on it. CSLY is really the only song on there I can honestly say I just don't care for. Pretty much love everything else. Also think Feelin and Take Me Back are sorely underrated.

Snowdog, I agree with your take on Feelin' and Take Me Back. Those songs are damn good. I don't mind CSLY. I think it's a Van Halenized pop song. Of all the songs on the album, it's the one that fits the least. I could picture it being on For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge.

LOL, you got me there. I guess maybe because I don't even think of VH3 as a Van Halen album... or else I *have* completely forgotten about it. Kind of like I don't think of anything with the "Black Sabbath" label past the 3rd or so singer as an actual BS record.
