My musical tastes were all over the place in 1995 but I bought the album the morning it was released. I loved DTM when I first heard/saw it on MTV. Went back to the dorm, popped it in the CD player and was disappointed for the first time with a VH album at first listen. Some really good songs but as a whole, felt very disjointed. That being said, I played that album all the time that year.

You forgot that nobody hated the "Wham Bam!" in Amsterdam until Ed said they were stupid lyrics. Then they became stupid lyrics.

There's a really good interview from the Balance era on YT, where they talk about the album, behind the scenes stuff etc. Can't remember the exact title but think it had Balance 1995 EPK in the heading, if anyone cares to try and find/post it?

No, they were stupid before. :-) But not as stupid as writing a song about a city in your guitarist's home country and equating said city to a doobie. Could you imagine if Ed wrote, "Wham hey, roll a USA! Yeah yeah yeah!" and gave it to Sam?

I never minded the ballads in the Sammy era. I really enjoy Not Enough, and not just Ed's stellar solo.

You say the album felt or feels disjointed to you. That's interesting, because I thought it sounded much more cohesive than For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge.

if it was that big of a deal don't put it on the album. simple. instead, they released it as a single, made a video for it and played it in concert every night. Ed certainly didn't have an issue releasing it to radio or anything like that

This album was my conversion into VH fandom. It was released my sophomore year of high school, smack dab in the middle, and Don't Tell Me was on heavy rotation on MTV. This, along with STP's Purple (by way of the Unplugged version of Big Empty), is what sent me down the rabbit hole of music fanaticism, learning to play guitar, and playing in a band.

And I would actually argue this was a fairly nice spurt of creativity for the band. Don't Tell Me, Humans Being, Me Wise Magic, and Without You are a pretty good string of first singles off of releases. I also think 3 would've been a million times better with a proper producer reeling Eddie in and a singer who was just as dominant a personality in the band.

Don't Tell Me and Take Me Back are two songs that are highly underrated as far as VH's best songs go.

My least favorite album, but obviously still good. Aftershock, Take Me Back, Baluchitherium, Doin Time, Seventh Seal, Amsterdam, and DTMWLCD are my favorite tracks.

Amsterdam has outstanding syncopation between Ed and Al, and all the lyrics are fine EXCEPT "Wham Bam"!. Still just one of the most embarrassing lines.

Dont Tell Me is cool, just dont like Sam's painful overstraining on the chorus. Ditto for the chorus and outro on Feelin.

Feeling has my favorite solo from the Sam era, dont care for the rest of the tune.

Take Me Back is just a great laid back tune. Aftershock is a blazing rocker. Baluchitherium sounds HUGE. I always wished Doin Time was longer. And there is certainly room for ONE drum instrumental in the band's history, especially one that doesnt even take up two minutes of disc time.

CSLY and Not Enough are just godawful VH tracks. I expect stuff like that from a Bon Jovi type band, disappointing to see it from the Mighty Van Halen.

Big Fat Money, along with SOI, seemed to solidify that Sam didnt know what to do with up tempo VH boogies. I do like Ed's jazzy solo.

Production is a bit hot, but better than the other Sam albums overall. Al's toms sound great, Ed's tone is huge but a bit buried in effects. From the Sam era I still prefer his more raw sounding tone on OU812, but like it more than 5150 and FUCK. But i still prefer the more "live" in the studio vibe production approach with the Brown sounds of the six pack and OU812(minus the obvious lack of bass in the mix on that one). It seems like every VH album from FUCK on are less spontaneous and more patched together and over produced in some ways.

Wow, I never made that connection but I think you may be on to something. I really like SOI and i think Sam's not quite finished lyrics actually work where I don;t really care for Big Fat Money where I feel like Sam is yelling in my ear the whole time. But in any case, I think Sam did have struggles with both tunes.

Never liked the solo in BFM, don't know why.

they opened the show I saw in the summer with BFM. I don't think it's as terrible as some people do, for the most part it's pretty cool, I don't go out of my way to listen to it very often.

I actually like Big Fat Money, but Jungle Drummer's point about Sam struggling with Ed's uptempo tunes has merit. The music on BFM pushes my buttons and I love the Jazzy solo. I don't think Sam's lyrics are all that bad but it leaves you breathless just trying to listen to them, let alone trying to sing along.
