I still like OU812 better than 5150. But they are the two best Sam era albums.

5150 has some good songs but I just don't like Ed's tone or Al playing those electronic drums.

That album sounds dated whereas VHI sounds timeless from a sonic perspective.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

This just might be the best song from the Sammy era …

This much is true. LG is a quintessential core VH track. Hard to get more VH than LG. Tho there are a half dozen or so that manage to do so.

I think 5150, both the song and the album, are great pieces of work.
What do you think is the 'best' song on that record?

I think 5150 is an underrated tune.

Completely agree. That song is Eddie at his peak IMO as far as complexity, structure and melody. Not close to his best shredding, and/or creating sounds that left you scratching your head in disbelief. However, itís an amazing song with probably Samís best lyrics on top. Would love to hear that song on the same guitar rig Ed used on VHl or II.

While the songs rival each other pretty well on both, the production is so bad on OU812, it detracts from the listening experience. I also agree OU812 is somewhat disjointed with some unecessary filler but not in a good way like Happy Trails. Best ending to a concert in my opinion. Anyway, 5150 and Summer Nights push it ahead hands down.. Havenít listened to OU812 in years. Probably time for a revisit. Keep waiting for the Sam era remasters. Hahahahahahahahaha

Squalen, I disagree that 5150 the song is overrated, though I may concede that it is not my favorite song on 5150.

Little Guitars is just all kinds of Van Halen cool.

If OU812 had better production and Sam had kept it in his pants with the lyrics, this album would be awesome.

I'm one of the least fans of the 5150 album. That said, the song 5150 I think is a really strong song. One of the songs that somewhat bridges the eras if that makes sense.

DD I really liked the production although the originals out shine the covers. The covers do show how that original band really could not sound like anything but themselves no matter what they play. Each had such a distinctive trait from Anthony's vox, Al's playing, Edward's tone and Dave just doing this w melody that were outside norm of the time.

Now if you could bring DD tone and drums etc... to 5150 material I think it would help immensely with how it ages and dated sound. Van hagar fans do deserve that to be remixed and updated. Such a cornerstone for that era, fix it up give those fans a timeless sound to support the material they love. Its deserved

I picked up the Diver Down album on release day, brought it home and listened to it a few times that evening. Compared even to Fair Warning, it seemed like a weird Van Halen album with the covers, especially Big Bad Bill.

One particular thing that struck me on first listen was the inclusion of Cathedral, which Eddie had been playing as part of his solo on the previous Fair Warning and WACF tours. Back then, you'd hear little snippets during songs or Eddie's solo spot that would eventually show up in some form on a later album. Also, I thought they kind of wrecked "Last Night" with the new lyrics and that echo on Dave's vox that made the song "Hang 'Em High."

Like just about everyone else, I didn't like Dancing In The Streets. However, when they played it at the '83 US Festival for the first (and I believe only) time in the US, I thought the way Eddie reworked the synth hook using heavy echo on his guitar leading into the song almost like something you'd hear from U2's The Edge was brilliant:

The Full Bug and Little Guitars saved that album for me at least. Those are way up in my top 10 VH tracks. It's weird that Van Halen only played the full version of TFB with the acoustic intro (played by Eddie live) just a couple times at the beginning of the '82 tour. But the live version of The Full Bug from the 83' South America tour kills:

Before Diver Down was released, DLR said something like the following:

Our next recorid is going to a religious, punk, Motown, flamenco, jazz and country concept album.

    He wasnít kidding.

    Cathedral (religious)
    Hang ĎEm High (punkish)
    Dancing In The Street (Motown)
    Little Guitars Intro (flamenco)
    Big Bad Bill (Jazz)
    Happy Trails (country)
