First VH road trip !! Drove from LI up to Syracuse in my uncles 82 Cutlas...getting fucked up the whole way... to see them at the Carrier Dome.Just started college and was a cook at the local McDonalds. Opened up the McDonalds on the weekends. VH show was on a Saturday. Remember like it was yesterday asking my manager Bob for the weekend off cause I was going to see VH in Syracuse. He told me no. Needless to say the McDonalds was calling my parents house at 6 in the morning that Saturday looking for me !! First and only job I ever got fired from. My friends older brother lived in Syracuse. Partied all weekend and crashed on his floor. Such good times !!!

It was awesome because it was new Van Halen. Never heard one criticism of it until joining this site. I was a junior at a large high school in 82. Every party had Diver Down cranked. But it was a Van Halen and AC/DC dominated school.

I never heard a lot of VH criticism until I joined this site.

I jammed this all year when it was released. I loved it! They never disappointed me with the first six records.

Another great Van Halenized gem with WHATGTG. The other covers were classic too.
Ed, doing some cool Cathedral and Little Guitars stuff.
    Intruder is a great intro.
The record ending with Happy Trails was classic.
A nice mellow jam with Secrets.
Full Bug, Hang 'em High, Little Guitars....great VH songs!

Cool back cover. Great sleeve photos....

    This record is freakin' awesome!!!

I could care less if it were all covers - this f’n rocks

My friend Pete figured out a way to install a stick that would allow him to drive his vintage Pontiac convertible standing up on the front seat.

So we both tried it out near Joliet. Just put intruder in the cassette deck, slammed the gas and stood on the front seat and got up to nearly 90 mph. Not the stupidest thing that I ever did but close.

That is how I remember this album.

I actually like WHATGTG more than YRGM, and always have. LOVE the sound of Al's snare on it, the "pulsing" rhythm of the song, the "laser gun" sounds of Ed's solo with the "sloppy" harmonics at the end of it, the "chirps" Ed throws in during his riffing, and another Classic VH vocal harmony during the chorus with MA prominently on top of it. Just a GREAT Halenized cover!

Same here, JD. For all the reasons you mentioned. Great opening track, too.

Coincidently, I just learned this a few days ago. Fun tune to play. And it's not hard.

Fun jam and pretty simple by VH standards.

Absolutely agree - I still listen to DD as much as the others. And, as a drummer, I love the isolated drum track of Hang 'em High...amazing.

Funny story. Reminds me of how many stupid things I did in my youth. I cheated death at least 100 times. The name I post under wasn’t something I made up. I EARNED it in college. And boy did it stick. So many friends of friends who I met during those years never knew what my name actually was!

Tequila and Van Halen brought the “wild side” of me way to many times. (Pun intended. Ha!!)

Is that right? The '90s weren't good to Van Halen? Two #1 multi-platinum albums, a Grammy, an MTV Video Of The Year award, selling out concerts everywhere when everyone else's attendance was suffering, release of their biggest song from that era, a multi-platinum/Top 5 double-live album, eight #1 Billboard Rock songs, etc. etc.

"‘Women and Children First’ gave the band its first real chance to stretch out in the studio, and they took full advantage by writing songs that didn’t date back to the club days,"

Well yeah, except for half of them.

Though I was "aware" of VH, and Eruption and all that at 9 years old - Diver Down is the 1st Van Halen album I remember to the extent of like asking my mom to buy it for me at the record store.

My best friend down the street had the vinyl, and I vividly remember studying the photo collage, which had a grape jelly stain on it from our numerous PB&J after school snackfests….

There was a pic of DLR sorta bent over with his face covered I think, and I was told that was from someone hitting him in the eye with a quarter from the crowd.

I couldn't believe Cathedral was not a synth at the time.
I always thought Roth sang "Etch a Sketch" which made no sense to me other than the archaic toy we all had...
Fast forward to like 1988 I remember a discussion at a camp ground with some guy who thought Little Guitars was a DLR solo song with Vai. He said he didn't realize Ed could play like that...

Also in regards to Little Guitars, I remember the day Dimebag Darrell was killed. I went to a store called media play to get the Damageplan CD. They always sold some budget guitars there. So some other guitar head guy picked up a guitar and played the Little Guitars acoustic intro perfectly note for note. It was really cool to see.

I always liked the album, because of the fond childhood memories. The production is sorta weird. I like Ed's tone but the whole album in general sounds "flat". Much like Blizzard of Ozz did to my ears. There's no dynamics to it. Production on 1984 is lightyears ahead of DD to me.
