Another personal favorite. Incredible. To each their own, and we all have our own tastes, but man the 93 tour that so many tout as being VH's best live just sounds tired when compared to boundless energy and creativity of shows like this.

IMO, if you wanted to name their most important 5-year-stretch, it would have to be '77 through '81.

You'd just have to start the period in early '77 because that's the year they they wrote a ton of their best songs. And of course the year the debut was recorded. They were ON FIRE that year. Friends of theirs have said that they'd see them almost every weekend, and each time they's see them they had ever more unbelievably good original songs under their belt. You just can't talk about VH's legacy without talking what they did in 1977.

And I hate to not include more of the club days era, and also Diver Down and 1984, so if you wanted to name a 10-year period, I'd say 1976-1985, which would of course include that stuff and also 5150.

No one in their right mind thinks the 93 tour was VH's best.

They were good and tight no doubt, but they weren't young and hungry anymore and that's the difference.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

It is pretty amazing how many classic songs they wrote in such a short period of time. Just a young, ferocious and hungry band that wanted to conquer the world, and did.

Their first 4 albums are arguably their 4 best (one can make a strong argument for 1984, also) and I think most of us who were there would say that their live performances with Dave peaked around 1981. Their live performances with Sammy probably peaked in the early 90s, but, I, like you, do not consider For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge to be one of their better albums.

I think how they wrote helped too. Each got to do what they do best. Edward could just have a funky riff but Dave could craft melody and words around it even in non traditional ways so Edward could just do his thing and not worry about ok it fit per se. Edward could provide endless riffs and ideas that meant Dave always had a fresh foundation to build on without trying to create riffs as that is not what he does. That team approach really freed them early on to just create. Edward got freed of details and Dave came in daily to a fresh canvas provided by Edward. It worked.

I can remember Ed once saying that what he liked about DLR as a co-writer was that he could come up with a vocal melody over almost anything, freeing Ed up to just let loose.
