"what you personally think were VH’s best 5 years when they were at the top of their game, musically on a chemistry level."

If you ended the question at just 'musically' it's more of a debate for me, as Ed was more mature later in the 80s, and even if his creativity waned a bit, the band was a little tighter overall and developed. Musically.

But since you asked about their chemistry, I have to go with 76-80 or 77-81. Dave and Ed's relationship has always been in doubt, and that's what comes through in their creations and performances. They exchange back and forth in the music and fight for the lead. The chemistry was raw and palpable and you could feel the tension. It's part of what makes CVH amazing, because everything else they did was about having fun and they did that as a team against the world. They fought internally, but everything Van Halen presented for the fan was about the experience. To their own demise.

After Dave left, things obviously changed forever -- the creation of the music seemed to flow easier. Everyone got along and you felt it in the music. It made for great tunes and again -- musically they were tighter and more mature. But everything they presented for the fans was not solely about having fun -- for one, there was an undercurrent of irritability and resentment toward CVH. Not a knock on Sam, because it's even worse now with VH4 and how they treat Sam's era. There was no reason to not play any song in the world before 1985, now this singer can't sing the other singer's song, or this or that. There is resentment on stage forever, regardless of who is on stage. And two, after Sam showed up, the band became a better business. Again, not a knock at all. It was necessary to save them. But while Sam provided financial and emotional stability, and it showed in the music, I personally feel it also muted that raw fuck-all electricity a little.

So to me, I think it is better chemistry when complete opposites create jaw-dropping music and performances, than people that get along really well being tighter and more musically appealing.

I'll go 79-83, which would include the recording of 1984.

Would have been interesting to see what Dave would have done with the music from the 5150 time frame.

Then again, a lot of that music was already written and partially worked up, as we all know, so maybe pre-Van Halen to about VH2 is the right answer.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

Thinking about it a little more, I think the argument can easily be made for 1974-1978. Riffs Ed wrote in this time made it onto VH albums released twenty and thirty years later. And when you listen to the boots from the first world tour, they might have never been tighter, playing 25 shows a month for five years had made them a tight live unit, maybe the tightest they ever were as the original unit, and not seen again until the 1991-1995 timeframe.

Agreed. 5 stellar studio albums and 5 tours in 5 years. Where have all the good times gone?

It's a loaded question to begin with, yet I'd submit that their club days in '76 until their reign in '81 we're pretty stellar. '86 - '91 we're undeniably great as well. Since they really did have TWO fantastic careers for various reasons, I don't think any consecutive five year run would be all encompassing...

    '76, '78, '84, '86, '93? That would round them out for me.

Yeah, by the time they hit the road opening for Sabbath in 1978, they were a fairly decent live act supporting a pretty good album …

The greatest hard rock band of all time at their absolute zenith. Nothing from them in the late 80s, 90s, or 2000s comes even close to this.
