78-82 and it's not even close. The band was a freight train always coming close to going off the rails, but always staying on the track.

While they were certainly playing things close to note for note on a nightly basis 91-93, that is the very reason it doesn't come close to the early tours. The live creativity and off the cuff vibe in their musicianship was almost nonexistent compared to the early years.

I'm one who doesn't really want a band to play all their songs note for note live. I have the albums to listen to for that. Give me more fills, or different fills, or extended intros and outros and solos, and that's what makes a live concert. Early VH, Zep, the Who, the Doors, those are some of the greatest live bands ever and not because they played things note for note the way the songs were on the albums. Some people do like the note for note approach to live playing better, it's all in the eye of the beholder.

I just love listening to all the extra fills not on the albums that Ed and Al would throw into every song back in the old days. Alex, especially, never played any songs the same on any given night back then. But for most songs on every tour from 91 up through 2015, I can almost tell exactly what fill he is going to play at what time in most songs.

It's going to depend on what you want.

If you want a polished and professional act that can still rock hard and deliver some pop hits then it's 1988-1993.

If you want a raw and unruly band that is bordering on out of control but always seems to manage to bring it back before it goes off the rails then 1978-1983 is your choice.

I prefer the 1978-1983 approach but that's just my opinion and the 1988-1993 approach was certainly popular as well.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

Yeah, that’s basically how I see it also. Although I’d differentiate the periods as best created music, 78-82. However as an acomplished cohesive band on stage, 86-92.

It is easy to argue for 78-82. The explosion of creativity from this band during those years coupled with wild abandoned on stage made them legendary.

During the Sammy years, the band just got tighter and tighter. Their sound and execution was more refined. The band exhibited discipline and maturity in their performances while still having fun. Sound wise, VH never sounded better than 1991-1995. Performance wise, VH with Sammy was best from 1988-1993. Yeah, I added a year, but the LRHRN tour did not end until 1993.

Sorry, Brett. I tried to start a birthday wish thread for ya earlier but it wouldn't let me. And I forgot to wish ya one on my data base error post.

Anyway, Happy belated Birthday, dude. I hope it was a good day.

January is a good month for birthdays. I got one too. And so does that Van Halen guy

I would normally start with '78 but 5150's gotta be in there, so: 1981-1986.

I absolute adore the 86-91/92 period live , I love the later guitar tone ed used and thought the band sounded huge!

Having said that it's very hard to go past 78-83, Though I think i'd even maybe go 76-81 , I felt like something changed around 82/83, Which makes sense given diver down.

    That's a good compromise.

I'd probably roll with the 78-82 crowd in general, but 5150 is a fucking stellar album.

    1978-1982.

    Not even close.

    Though, I'm optimistic for 2019-2023.
