Had the stitches removed yesterday and the scar is healing as scheduled.

Next follow up is the beginning of April & she'll be finding out in the next few days when the consult appointment with the radiation therapist will be.

    Radiation schedule is in.

April 1 through May 10, 5 days a week for a total of 30 sessions.

Radiation therapist weighed the pros and cons for her. About the only comforting news is that radiation is quick, 10-15 minutes each session & that's it. The two big downsides are that her skin will suffer some light burning as treatment progresses & that because her salivary glands are involved, any and all foods and drinks are basically going to taste like shit for a couple months.

All the best Al. FWIW, 6 weeks sounds like a long time but it’ll be past before you know it. Longest part of treatment (for me at least) was in the waiting room. The staff in these places are generally very compassionate too and go the extra mile to keep you as comfortable as they possibly can.

Went thru this with my uncle. His sense of taste was greatly affected early on, and it is important to keep weight on, for their health and for their feeling of well being. No one wants to see themselves waste away.

Artificial saliva helped. Biotene makes a spray and a mouth wash and there are some melting tabs that help with the dry mouth. There are different brands, she might get relief from one more than another

also stock lots of hard candy, The mint and lemony ones seemed to help with saliva more than anything.

and also to get the metallic taste out of the mouth

If she has swallowing problems there are products that thicken any liquids without affecting their taste . Sometimes it can be hard to get water down them, cause it tastes weird, and if they are choking on it, they will try to avoid. Ice chips and popsicles are great to have on hand too. Soothes the mouth and helps to hydrate so they don't get sores

As for the food. I wish you luck. The sense of taste can be really badly affected. And a food that does taste good to them one day tastes like crap the next. Try taking small meals thru the day. And stock up on meal replacements so that she can quickly drink up some calories and nutrition. They'll taste bad too but you can get a lot of nutrition in with a small glass of ensure or another meal replacement

Chemo is officially over & after Friday, radiation will officially be over.

Needless to say, we both want this week to fly by & she just wants to start recovering at home. Starting the day after her last dose of radiation, she will feel incrementally better with each passing day. Some people feel back to normal in as little as two weeks. Some people take six weeks. I've been told the average is about a month to regain normal taste again & for the throat to stop hurting.

Plus, she can start gaining weight again. The last week especially, has been really taxing because she wasn't able to keep much of anything down. Since April 1, she's lost 24 pounds.

The light at the end of the tunnel is now in sight. She can start getting better & me? Well, I can start attempting to sleep soundly again. To quote Lili Von Schtupp: "Goddammit, I'm exhausted."

    Treatment is officially over.
A huge sigh of relief for both of us.
Now she can focus on regaining her voice & the ability to keep down solid food.
And me? I can go to bed tonight slightly less stressed with each passing day until she is completely back to normal, which docs say will take anywhere between 2 to 6 weeks, depending on how well her body can heal itself.
With how much she's been sleeping, I would like to think it's on the shorter part of that timetable.
First post-treatment follow up is during the first week in June, so my next update will be then.
Thank you all for the well wishes for Mama Van Bundy. I relay them regularly & she appreciates them all.

She had her three month surgery follow up appointment a week ago.
