    Default Diamond Dave / Sinatra

Not sure if this has ever been covered, Sinatra's influence on David Lee Roth, but I thought it was interesting.

DVR'd the Frank Sinatra 1970 concert from Royal Festival Hall. Having known Sinatra's collection from my father's 8 tracks being played as a kid over and over, I had never really seen a full concert.
In watching the first few songs, it started feeling strangely familiar that I had seen this before. The strange faces / smiles / leering, little ticks, funky shimmy body movements, vaudevillian affects, etc. Then it hit me that I was watching current David Lee Roth. Sinatra even yelled out at one point "What the Hell is the next line"? then gave a cheesy smile.

Now I have seen the 'cool' Ol' Blue Eyes from the early years (like 70's / early 80's Diamond Dave) but this was a 55 year old Sinatra at the late revival of his career. Not sure if people picked him apart like we do DLR, probably because he kept his voice amazing and in range, but man it was weird / disturbing seeing him present the funky showmanship that Dave has also seemed to have really adapted since '12.

Probably not getting the point across that I want to, but was just strange viewing this and thinking Dave must be watching late career Sinatra and copping his moves LOL.

Sinatra is almost 10 years younger in this concert from 1970 at Royal Festival Hall than Dave is right now. No wonder kids think our bands are ancients. I mean...yeah they are but....bah whatever.

Anyway, yeah, you can see little influences here and there.

Dave definitely shows his influences in his performances.

DLR definitely does a lot of Sinatra. Definitely part of his thing.

I think we rip on DLR because he is not reaching his potential. Other rock stars try to look younger. DLR looked 10 years older than his age in his last performance. That and his screaming instead of singing of course.
    Right here I say....

Yeah, Dave was always more Vaudeville/Broadway/Motown/Sinatra than he was Led Zeppelin and Rolling Stones. That's been transparent in his showmanship and musical tastes. But that's a good part of why Van Halen is so different than their copycat bands.

Love some Frank, he's a go to in the collection, but damn, I can't fucking stand L.A. is my Lady.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!
