Jump - Panama - Hot For Teacher... to me, THE 3 songs that really ARE Van Halen. The energy, videos, fun, lyrics and of course the musicianship. One thing about this album I also really appreciate is how good it sounds. Easily one of the best rock albums ever.

Yeah, I'm The One by a whisker for me as well.

But no one does a better hard rock boogie that Van Halen.

To me that's their signature sound.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

Production on the album is stellar, once again most specifically the first six tracks. For some reason Girl Gone Bad and House of Pain sound like they were produced solely by Don Landee - and I only say that because they sound more like 5150 than the rest of the tracks on 1984. There's less definition and excitement to the mix compared to the earlier tunes, especially in the guitar tones.

But overall it's produced/mixed so well that it doesn't sound overly dated. It's a product of its time for sure, but it holds up really well.

    Default Happy 35th Anniversary 1984!

I had this giant poster over my bed for years. I’m actually not sure what happened to it.

The record store was actually going to throw it away and just let me have it.

Now, that makes sense. Could like your post +1,000 for effectively communicating what I've thought for years. The difference in GGB and HOP in comparison to the rest of the album always bugged me, especially HOP. To me, DLR's vocals sound buried on it.

I was 21 years old in 1984- it was a very, very good year in many aspects. Unfortunately I needed to have a emergency appendectomy performed at one point that year, and I missed the 1984 tour. This was back when they made a long incision and the recovery time was weeks, and I was still in pain for some time afterward. My 13 year old daughter recently had one and was home the next day walking around like it was nothing. It's the only CVH tour I missed. I clearly remember thinking back then "oh they'll be back around next year". I couldn't have been more wrong. lol That same "they" still hasn't been back!

I had mine out in May. Had the worst pain ever, I thought I was gonna die. Had to go in an ambulance for the first time in my life. They took it out next morning laparoscopically and I was home a day later. But I did take a few weeks to really recover, but man super easy surgery. Of course I’m old too. But you can’t even see where it was taken out anymore.

When I was 21 I was in the ultimate shape for me anyway- running, lifting weights, played sports in high school and still fooled around a few years later. Now at age 55, not so much... Anyway, yes with mine it almost burst while I was in a hospital room overnight until the surgery the next morning. So it was a several inch long scar to take it out and another small scar for a drainage tube that was in for weeks. I thought I was a tough guy but man it sucked, and with each step, especially up stairs, it felt like I was being stabbed with a big knife. Back then they kept you in the hospital bed for around three or four days before even getting up to walk around. That was a mistake because it made it ten times worse when you walked down the hospital hallway like a 90 year old. My 13 year old daughter had it done laparocopically like you, and she was strolling around the next afternoon.

Wow man yeah it’s way different now. I think they actually made me get up that day to walk around. Luckily mine didn’t burst or they would’ve had to do it the way that you had it done. I’ve never felt pain like that I was just knocked on my ass it hurt so bad. I can deal with pain really well but that pain was absolutely unbelievable.

I was 10 when 1984 and it sucked me in and made a Van Halen fan for life. Obviously MTV had a big role with the heavy rotation of Jump, Panama and Hot for Teacher. Lots of range on this album. Over the years, Top Jimmy has become my favorite song on the album. I’d go on to discover even better earlier albums. At 10, I had no idea of the drama surrounding the band, but remember being devastated when Roth left. 1984 will always have a special place in my heart even though it’s not their best. Listened to it a couple times today.
