I still think the FW era is Ed at the peak of his guitar prowess.

From the album itself, to the concerts & bootlegs.
The guy was on some other astral plane.

    1. VH party/sexual attitude to a "T"
    2. Eddie's tapping at its best
    3. One of Eddie's best riffs (happy song, yet mean riff/boogie)
    4. One of Eddie's best solos
    5. Dave's melodic hooks at their best
    6. Dave's comedic lyrics at their best
    7. At least two of Dave's patented high-pitched screams
    8. Alex's finest drumming
    9. Mike's background vocals at their finest
    10. As great of an ending of a song as they have ever one and arguably their best

I think people don't think of it as a go-to as "the one song that sums VH up" because it's an overplayed hit. But it's got everything. "Unchained" would be a runner-up but not enough tapping and "Panama" as well but not enough background vocals.
No arguments from me here. I agree with all 10 of your points. It’s certainly a contender for the title, if not the outright winner. I almost started re-learning that solo yesterday, but opted to learn Ice Cream Man instead.

@Coulda: where has HFT ended up in your best VH song brackets traditionally?

And HFT just oozes VH attitude. It might not be their quintessential song, but it's for damn sure one of their best. HFT is more than a song - I'm not sure what to call it, but it's something more.
It's a crazy song. A big band number, really. Lots of swing touches, humor and smart-assery. Just vintage, yet modern Van Halen. Not my favorite either. I remember my kids seeing this before I had brainwashed them. They were adolescents and the video came on. Ed's walking toward the camera faking the solo. May daughter just quietly said, "Wow. They're good." At the time she was a Jonas Brothers fan.

I'll never forget hanging with Squalen in SoCal, mid 80's,, and lamenting all the education that i missed.

While this is my fav VH tune, what Ed does at 2:35-2:38 is simply amazing. Pure Holdsworth. The entire guitar track is sick...
Prob one of Al's best performances too. His fills are all over the place

I feel like I can climb Mt. Everest when I listen to this damn song...

    You're welcome for the vid...

My favorite album by my favorite band!
Jedi mentioned several of the guitar playing aspects I agree with, and others have commented on the songs. Not much more to add, other than this album literally changed my life!
"There's too many people on this basketball that's floating around the sun, who are too afraid to allow themselves to FEEL" - Edward Van Halen
"Van Halen was never about the singer..." - A very wise fan.
"Embrace the past. Live in the moment but keep your eyes on the future, and keep on moving forward..." - Richie Sambora

You seem a little obsessed. And jealous. I'm sorry you never got to see Dave Halen live. Or meet any of the band. If only you lived in SoCal! Ah well. Not all of us can live in the land of milk and honey. Some of us have to live in Aero land.

    Default Happy 35th Anniversary 1984!

It’s such an important album because it really was the introduction for millions to the band, and I’m sure a lot of people on this site too. Yeah you might’ve heard of Van Halen if you were a little kid back then, but this album really put them on the map for you. Thank MTV too.

Man, learn to take a joke & be less defensive.

I was quoting the song lyrics, and just having some fun.

It has one of their best songs of all time. Right in the top five no question.

A follow up to 84 in the same vein would’ve been a monster.

You’ve cited me randomly at least a half dozen times this week for no apparent reason. I’m def not defensive lol. I’m pointing out how you’re stirring the pot. Mistake.

    Stirring the pot???

I'm trying to include you & be social, while everyone else is dog piling on you.
I felt bad and wanted to show you could be good natured.

    So much for that...
