I knew exactly when the release date was so must have been MTV or the radio. And I also knew for some reason that Tower in Hollywood was going to be open to sell them. By then I was 20 and much more in tune with what was going on with album releases. It was also becoming a much bigger deal.

I thought the riffs we're neat, and enjoyed the 'space' Ed used in the verses, to let Sammy do his thing. Kind of a call and response, similar to Runaround. I also liked the wah wah tinged solo. Some of those patterns are really 'old school' Eddie, not to mention the off time syncopated thing with Al that came out of the solo.

    I always liked it.
I don't dislike it but it's my least favorite song on my favorite Van Hagar album.

I think I'm just not a big fan of the main riff. I actually like Sam's lyrics.

"Say you had enough, gonna throw yourself out a window..."
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

My brother is ten years older than I am, so I can remember for my 12th birthday him taking me to see Van Halen on the Diver Down tour at the old Capital Center (Largo, MD...no, I don't know if it is the famous night) and then he got me Diver Down the next month for Christmas.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

    Never bought one release day.
For most of them, within a week or two I had it.

In the early days I didn't always know release dates. Ya just heard it on the radio, or heard the DJ say it's out and your parents took you to get it.

It was either Grass Roots or Three Dog Night.

The local rock station kept me informed on release dates.

I heard Van Halen from a friend's copy of the album shortly after it was released in 1978, and I taped it on cassette. Saw VH open for Black Sabbath at the Spectrum in Philly. I have mentioned the story before- I began playing guitar in 1976. In 1978 I was in a Beatles tribute band, so I was playing mostly that along with some rock standards (Zep, Tull, Bad Co., etc.). After I made it through side one of Van Halen, I thought if this is what guitar playing has become now maybe I had better hang it up. LOL I didn't though, and when we were playing rock/pop in 1979 we worked some of the "easier" VH tracks into our set. After I heard Van Halen I was convinced that the ending of Eruption was keyboard/synth, it couldn't be anything else. After I saw them open for BS, I went home that night and tried "tapping", but became frustrated because I couldn't get any sustain out of the strings. I wasn't flicking the notes off with my right hand. Kind of tough to see that level of detail across the arena from crappy seats- it just looked like he was touching the strings. I can't stress enough how insane Van Halen sounded in 1978 with very little to compare it against. Younger people have heard all of the shredders and take Van Halen in that context. But back then yes there was Hendrix, Zep, and assorted fast rock guitar solos such as Boston Long Time, but nothing like what Ed was doing.
    Thanks for sharing.

As a guitar player who came along post EVH I find the stories from guys who were playing before he came on the scene to be fascinating.

It's hard to imagine the paradigm shift since I grew up expecting that kind of guitar playing but even with that being said I still recognized there was something unique about EVH when I got into them in the early 90s.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

    I like seeing that.
    Why do you like it????

It is a byproduct of age demographic of the posters. Is just seeing van hagar album names make you feel? But why, it reflects age and some good personal memories nothing good or bad about any particular album etc....

Maybe it's me, I'm pretty high but read like a creepy viagra thing. Not sure I get it sorry

Although WACF is the first Van Halen album I picked up on release day, I did buy the 1st and 2nd albums within a month of their release dates. In fact, I bought VHII *at* a Van Halen concert - specifically the 2 day Califfornia World Music Festival at the LA Coliseum. The promoters used the next door LA Sports Arena as a "Rock n Roll Flea Market" and a few vendors sold new album releases.

I had ELO, Boston, and KISS 8 tracks. Wish I had hung on to them.

On actual release day it was FUCK. I worked at Walmart, me and a buddy I worked with would go back to receiving every day about a week before to see if it came in yet, about two days before..jackpot. We grabbed it and tried to buy it, but our dumbasses didn't realize it wasn't in the system yet..got a write up for that
    Dealing with it.
