Question: how did everyone get their news about when a new album was going to drop?

I didn't live near a record store, and was too young to drive (at the time); I guess WBAB and WNEW were the only two stations that played rock in my area, so it was usually word of mouth that told me that a new Van Halen record had dropped.

I have been a fan since 1982, after hearing "Little Guitars" on the radio. 1984 was a record that was gifted me, and I actually got pissed off that I had heard about 5150's release from my science teacher (yes, she was hot, and some days she wore leather skirts, but I took it as a bad sign that my teacher would like Van Halen - especially after the band had recently come out with brute force riffs like "House Of Pain." On some tracks on 5150, Ed's style changed to the extent that I wondered if Hagar played on the album alongside Ed - but this comes from someone who doesn't play guitar).

OU812 was purchased around release day, as was FUCK, Balance, III, and ADKOT.

For me the radio. I didn't have cable, but some of my friends did, along with the magazine subscriptions to Circus and others, so between all of us we knew. For me. getting an album wasn't an easy deal, was probably a thirty minute drive to the closest record store.

Then I saw the Poundcake performance on the MTV video awards and went out and bought FUCK.

I was kind of late to the game as RHRN, Balance, and III were the only albums I bought on release day.

I'd like to say VHI but I was two years old...
Same here but my Mom picked it up for me while I was at school. Then every release since then the day of myself of course.

I bought their debut album, Van Halen the day after it came out... The Record Factory in San Jose, Ca hadn't unpacked their new releases on the day it came out.
Woke up this mornin, got Blue Moon in your eyes...

Tower Record was great for that. Remember the $.66 special that they had on 45's?

I remember when I picked up the "Why Can't This Be Love" single; the needle on my turntable was busted, and I had to listen to it on a (neighbors) borrowed Fisher Price record player.

That was my introduction to Van Hagar .

"What the hell is this??" In two years, I went from the riveting solo's on Girl Gone Bad - pumped through a pair of Technics 3 way speakers/12 inch woofers - EVH's wailing used to drive my Parents nuts - to Sammy's scat on WCTBL. Soon enough, however, the LP came along; once I heard "Summer Nights" and "5150," my angst was soothed.

Every one since RHRN on day of. I went to the store the night before it was released and the guy wouldnt sell it to me and a friend of mine. He said they would get in trouble for selling it early. But he did show us the cover and song list. Haha. How times have changed. BOV1 was the only album that I went to the midnight release of. Most stores in my area didnt do them, but I was away at college for that one.

MTV, Hit Parader, Metal Edge, and radio were the easiest way for me to find new releases.

There’s certainly a lot of fans posting here that bought their first day off release during the Hagar years.

    I like seeing that.

I remember on 1/24/95 I was a junior and we had a caravan of stoned high school males go to Best Buy to buy Balance.

They sold like 10-12 copies to us. The age before illegal downloads or cd burning.

Well, considering 1984 was released almost 35 yrs ago, and most posters here are probably in their 40s, not exactly shocking. A lot of people may not have had an older sister who bought the debut album when it came out and got her little brother into the band at a younger than normal age, of which I will always be grateful.

Default What was the first VH album you bought on release day?

I didnt even know when albums were coming out. I would just have mom take me to the record store a lot, and when I saw something I wanted I would get it. I think the first time I remember knowing a release date was probably FUCK or Balance.

Exactly most of us were little kids when almost all of the early albums were released. Its not like we had access to go run out on a whim and go get an album. Most of us had to get our parents to take us and we had to even know that something was released, which I never did. Id see a video on MTV and then Id go get the album.

I think I heard about most release dates on MTV or the radio.

I remember standing in line at the Warehouse to buy the two UYI albums when they came out in 1991. Pretty sure I heard about the release date on the radio.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

Yep. I seem to remember my Mum surprising me when coming home from school with 5150 and OU812, and probably FUCK as well, on cassette the day of release. Pretty sure all six pack albums I got for birthdays, but man, that was a long time ago and I was real young. I do remember being in the 2nd grade when my oldest sister and my cousin both got me consciously into VH. As soon as I heard WACF for the first time, I knew that was the greatest album of all time.
