I found this on CD at Middle Earth Records in Downey, CA back in the summer of 1996 …

...couple of my thoughts on this DTNA II...

As I've stated a few times before, DTNA was THE "gateway drug" song for me into the world of the Mighty, Mighty VH. I remember EXACTLY where I was the first time I heard the song, and had to ask, "Who is THAT?!?"

And, gun to my head, DTNA would be THE song I would choose if I had only one song to hear for the rest of my days.

    All that being said:

    1) This outtake is decent...but not great. My gut reaction is that the vocal choices just kinda sound "average" and/or commonplace for the late '70's. Kinda what every other band in 1979 would do with that song.

    2) Because of this, it's also proof to the argument we've had around these parts before about just how hard DTNA (as recorded) really is to sing.

LOL, how long has that fucking Blood and Fire riff been around?

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

It's funny, because I think every single demo version of the tunes that ended up on ADKOT sound better that the 'pro quality' cd. Haha.

Was just listening to early demos (albeit on an official release) by Harem Scarem, and love the alternate vibe etc. That DTNA one? Not a fan of most of the lead vocals. Everything else sounded ok to me.

There's a great market for alternate takes and stuff from the killing floor... with a few other band's exceptions, there's only one key ingredient missing from Van Halen at this phase... A funeral...

Been a long while since iv'e posted...i kinda pop up every couple of years, like our fav band lol. Anyhoo, i like this take on DTNA. No, it's not as good as the final cut, but i do kind of dig the looser vibe. I also liked the extra "ohhh yeahhhh" before Ed's break down. I'll echo that a box set of stuff like this would kick ass!
    SIMPLY SAID....GOD IS ED!!!!

    It is looser, and enjoyable.

The final take, though, is just so freaking great.
Dave on his A game, with the album version.

I remember being a little kid, hearing it on the radio.

Never once, did i think: Not a great singer, but....

DAVE WAS A GREAT, UNIQUE SINGER.

It may be take two but I am curious how take one sounded. Clearly take two is the track used for the finished product with some overdubbed vocals from Dave. Verse two is indeed the actual verse two that made it to the album. Van Halen used to record totally live with everyone in the room at the same time. My guess is that Dave would sing whatever he wanted as a guide vocal or a chance to experiment knowing full well that he would have multiple chances to redo whatever he, the band or Ted and Donn didn't like. I'm sure when they all listened back to this take after cutting it, it was decided that Dave sounded good on the second verse and they would build the rest of the vocals around it. The part that surprises me is how that were able to blend the overdubbed parts with the original vocal. I have seen lots of pics from these sessions and you can see Dave singing right along with the band playing. If this were true I would have thought I would be hearing more bleed from the band in Dave's mic on the second verse. The isolated vocal track sound pretty consistent from verse to verse. probably the magic of Donn Landee.
