I am Totally sick and tired of hearing and reading the term "Van Hagar"
It was invented and is used evermore by the Rothheads to make VH with Sam something less than VH with Dave....it is used, with a few exceptions , as a derogatory term and I'm worn out on it....it has become as tiresome as the notion that Sammy is fat, or Dave is bald....
Who Cares ?
VH with Sam has every bit as much right to be called "Van Halen" as the dave era....millions of fans who made 5150, ou812 , F.U.C.K. , and balance number one albums....and sold out arenas across the country say so!!
VH started in the 70's and ended, for me, in the mid 90's...VH3 was little more than an EVH solo album with a very mediocre lead singer(cherone)
The roth years were great, The Sam years were great , I love both....I just believe Sam is the better choice now....
I want VH to live again....not as a nostalgia 80s act, but as a progressive band that records hit after hit.
As for you Roth fans, I respect your opinion, I just dont agree....but we all ought to be adult enough to avoid juvenile name calling...
Ok...I better end this...I'm way all over the place now....lol..
Peace

Dude, Sammy himself refers to the band he fronted as "Van Hagar".
As my ol' grandpappy used to say, "Don't ever tell anybody I told you this, ya little fucker."

Van Hagar is not a negative tag. It's just easier than saying "Van Halen with Sammy Hagar or Van Halen without David Lee Roth". Take pride in it. And, note that the failure sometimes referred to as "The Cherone Era" is not really called anything at all besides the mislabeled EVH solo effort.

I agree that the term is an easy way to differentiate from the respective eras that should not be taken derisively. However, I think the point kevohman is making is valid in that a lot of times the term is used to illustrate a Roth fan's belief that the Roth era was the only true instance of Van Halen despite the fact that the brothers of the same name remain in the band while Roth does not.

Even though it's been said already in this thread, I also use the term 'Van Hager' because it is easier to say. If anyone is offended, then unfortunately that's their hangup.

You're sick of it! Further proof that Sammy thinks he's the almighty savior of the band that pulled him out of virtual obscurity (and don't start throwing numbers at me because I won't listen), not only does he himself refer to the band as Van Hagar, they're selling Van Hagar t-shirts at the concert this summer. To me, if I was Edward and knew about that along with the petty and rather disturbing stage antics involving Ed and his guitar, I'd think old Sam's lost his marbles. For some reason, Eddie Van Heinekin is funny. It might get a bit old and start to piss Ed off after awhile, but it's not indicating in any way that Van Halen wouldn't have survived without Sammy Hagar's involvement and it speaks volumes about the man's ego if you ask me.

By the way, you never hear anyone saying Van Roth, it's either Van Halen or Van Hagar. Personally, I prefer Van Halen.

Hey Kev,

If Sammy with Halen has every right to be called Van Halen, then so does the Charone era.

Don't be hypocritical.

I know where you're coming from kevohman, and I used to think the same thing.

But, I heard Sammy refer to it as "Van Hagar".

To me now, I think of it as a distinction. If you call a radio station or talk to someone and refer to the band as "Van Hagar", there's no question as to who it is you're refering to. But say "Van Halen", then the question always comes up. "Sam or Dave"?

The Roth-heads can try use it as a slur, or say there's only ONE Van HALEN. No. Sorry. You're wrong. There has been three integrations of Van Halen.
BUT there is only ONE "Van Hagar".

" I know what you're thinking: "Do I want to watch Mard? We know that horses were very strong and could actually stop airplanes from flying away. The ones made out of stone called "statues" -- occasionally came to life and rode off is a colonial cliche. How many more times do we need to hear about how the oppressive Raj's wore villainous black capes, crafted cunning plastic masks to impersonate people, and drained all the blood from their slaves so they could keep the fluid in bottles in their dungeons? I mean, YAWN!

But if you're willing to sit through this dry sort of historical drama one more time -- or even just this dry historical review -- you will not be disappointed. In fact, some of you might just learn something they didn't teach you in school!-

I think a lot of the confusion arises from the fact that "Sammy Hagar" is a derogatory term. I was wearing some capris pants with floral patterns the other day, and a friend of mine said I was pulling a "Sammy Hagar."

Donor

someone call a waaaaambulance...
look, I listen to F.U.C.K more than any other VH Album.

But to me Van Halen (with Roth) was a package deal... a band, not a guys name. It was the greatest concerts I have and ever will see. And with out Roth, it was something great, but not what Van Halen means to me, so Van Hagar becomes a very easy way to express what erra of VH someone is talking about.

get over it already.

It's kind of hard to take your arguement seriously when you say VH with Dave was Van Halen and VH with Sammy was Van Halen, but VH with Gary wasn't Van Halen. What's that old saying - you can't have her pie and eat it too? I always forget.

Van Hagar!
LOL!

It's almost as nasty as the 'N' word to some of you guys

As already pointed out, Sammy calls it Van Hagar(which again kinda has a "only WE can use that word"....you get the picture --see 'N' word for references )

I remember the day someone announced it on the news, the next day at school everyone was calling it "Van Hagar"

Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello used the word best when talking about finding a new lead singer--"the last thing you want is to be Van Hagared"
