Has anyone in Rock ever contributed more w/ such great background vocals? There are so many songs during both eras that were accentuated by his contribution and energy. It was a real treat seeing him on stage again in Tampa w/ Sam.

I agree that he is a great singer, and his voice fits perfectly behind Dave or Sam's. Also on his own he sounds amazing (Somebody get me a doctor from '98)

Before you take a swig of that JD,, just take a look and a listen to good old Dave. He might be in great physical shape, but the hair (or lack there of) and the voice (Seems like the cigs could have helped too).

I think its do to him having the most stable lifestyle.
He seems to have:
1) A great wife & kids
2) possibly good genetics
3) a great work ethic (fitness wise at least)
4) A very level head.

Mikes contribution to the classic VH sound is as essential as Ed, Al, and Dave.

He does seem to be doing well these days, he has held up well even after all the partying he has been exposed to.

He is having some fun these days, jamming with his pal Sammy.

I am sure he is "bummed" with the VH bros. right now.

That sounds like a press release.

Yeah, he's a good solid bass player, and his harmonies are grossly under-rated. But I know he doesn't like Dave - so I think he's a dork!

Maybe it's cause Mikey is from good 'ole Chi-town? Good mid-western boy at heart.

There are plenty of performers who have contributed more than Michael Anthony in the backround singing role, one of them being Keith Richard.

And I would have to disagree with showering Michael Anthony with praise. While his high pitched backrounds blended well with Eddie's lower voice backing up Roth, his voice was way to similar to Sammy's. This resulted in a general ramping up of the shrill uncool high pitched singing we find in Van Hagar.

On the matter of his apprearance, he looks like he always has: like he's in a country music band. He's chunky enough, and that ape drape he sports can only be found among the country crowd nowadays...

Finally, I don't know how technically proficient Mike is on bass, but he sure isn't showing it on any Van Halen CD. In fact, Eddie Van Halen has taken credit for playing some of the more complicated Van Halen bass parts in the past.

You have to wonder about a guy who is content one-noting through a career...

As far as Mikey looking healthy;Don't let the hairline fool you, I think he has had it surgically enhanced. It was receeding for years and now it is back. Take a close look at the Humans Being video. His hair was really thin. Now it is thick again. I will agree that the skin on his face has held up better than Dave or Ed. I will agree with whoever chalked that up to genetics.

His background vocals are okay. His bass playing is well...functional at best.

You know, it's true... The bass playing is pretty simplistic. Listen to something like Unchained or Running with the Devil... The bass is practically one note, which leaves plenty of room for Ed to improvise. Still a good guy in the right place and right time though...

Man some of you are so bitter about Van Halen that now even Mikey sucks too. Like you would have said that 20 years ago. LOL! Were you ever Van Halen fans? I suppose you think Dave's backing band now does the harmonies better than Mike right? Of course you do.

Guys, the sound of Van Halen is driven by Ed's guitar, not the bass. There isn't enough room for Mike to play jazz-style bass lines. This isn't Rush or Dream Theater. Ed plays more than the average lame ass rhythm player chunking along on power chords, Mike holds the bottom so that Ed can noodle. Without the solid bottom, you have mish-mosh.
