Default Some More Covers - Iron Maiden Stuff

OK they're all up now, of course now I'm scared because of BC's comments. But I'm a big boy, I can take the criticism...I think. I know Iím no Dave Murray or Adrian Smith.

For some reason it won't let me put the Trooper up on Soundcloud, keeps deleting it. So I just put it on the VHLinks server. Weird. I guess the system thought my version was SOOO good it had to be the real one.

The best was Soundcloud blocking my own bandís music a long time ago saying it was copyright infringement. And it was even funnier to have them argue it through email with me before they finally backed down. ďWe canít be sure you wrote it.Ē Look assholes that music and those dumb lyrics are 100% me.

Let me get this straight, Soundcloud blocked your original content because they didn't believe it was you? Must be that the traffic your band gets on their site is so big that they had to be sure.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Default Here you go - apologies for the rambling

As discussed, here is the constructive criticism I offered. It's only on one area (so no need to be scared - well - not too scared!) but it is by far the important one. It's something that - like The Final Countdown solo - is something that everybody plays wrong and is a lot trickier than they think. I'm talking about the lead riff.

I've yet to see an accurate transcription (though I've seen plenty of batshit ones, lol) so here is my own, 100% accurate transcription and performance notes that I strongly recommend you follow, as will soon become clear. This is gonna be a long explanation, partly to drive my points home, and why the whole song rests on this riff being played correctly, and partly because I've been awake 50 hours and am turning into a gibbering wreck.

    What's wrong?
What you and the rest of You Tube are doing is playing straight 16th notes, which means three things:

    1) the fretted notes can't 'pop' like Adrian's do, which is essential, but rush by, hyper and scatty, like a mouse on speed.
    2) snatching at the fretted notes and mispicking. Just a nano-second out and the integrity of the note collapses.
    3) Worst of all, you end up sounding like Jannick 'chimp with broken fingers' Gers.

Don't worry if it doesn't make sense just yet, it will in a minute. First, let's look at the accurate transcription:

See how the fretted notes are 8th notes and not 16ths? Up to now your ears probably thought Adrian plays evenly but he doesn't. The pedal tone is actually twice as fast as the fretted notes. Just think about that for a second. The same thing happens in The Final Countdown solo. Now, play the first 2 bars at a super-slow tempo a few times. Seriously, go and play! Or at least punch it into your tab software and listen back at 30bpm.
    .
    .
    .
*It really is essential you do this before reading on*
    .
    .
    .
Chances are you found the first bar different, yet easy enough after a few tries, but the second bar disorientating and a guitar tongue-twister, especially beats 2 and 3, as you get slammed by the ever-shifting syncopation (which is also a feature of The Final Countdown solo) and the sudden shift from 4 open string notes inbetween fretted notes to the occasional burst of 2. Now try the remaining 2 bars. More than likely you're experiencing the headfuck of a much more complex riff that you first thought, it's true phrasing throwing you off-kilter, the ever-changing note groupings, and all at a very slow tempo.

Now that you've done that a few times, listen to Maiden's version, and then replay your cover version. You should be able to hear the vast difference compared to your initial all-16th notes, the importance of the 8th notes for clarity, the authority and control in Adrian's playing as opposed to the hurried, blink-and-you-miss it, flash of a fretted 16th note (often scuffed), and the weird, unsettling effect caused by the speeding up, slowing down and syncopation; the fretted notes popping out of the blurring 'noise' of the open string for just a nano-second yet seeming to hang in mid-air. You never noticed it before this post but you can't miss it now

    Ze Solution!
The solution is also a bit tricky to get to grips with as it goes against your instinct to alternate pick (like you did every time you played the riff on your guitar) but if you can play Hang 'Em High then this will be familiar territory.

Pick every fretted note with a down-stroke and then immediately play the open string with another down-stroke. Two down-strokes in a row, half-speed to double-speed, off-beat to on-beat - it'll take quite a while to get used to it and start to build speed but it gives you time to develop an even greater appreciation for Adrian Smith!

Yeah I know I play that opening riff with 16 notes alternate picked because my hand falls off if I donít. So youíre saying the whole thing is downstokes? I donít know if I can downstroke pick that fast on those open notes, my hand will get so tired.

No, just down stroke every fretted note and the subsequent open string.

    D---D--U--D--U-----D--D--U--D--U-----D--D--U---D-U
    12--0--0-- 0--0-----7-- 0--0--0--0------8--0--0---0--0

This way you always hit the fretted notes on a downstroke, have more control over the number of open strings you play, and regardless of 4 or 2 open strings will have much-needed continuity in an otherwise ever-changing riff. If you did pure alternate picking then you'd throw yourself off even more as the picking direction changes with every section of the riff.

I see what youíre saying. Yeah the two downstrokes in a row throw me off, but this definitely sounds like the right way to play it. Iíll have to keep working to get it up to speed like this. Cool.

With the correct timing the picking motion:

    12--0--0--0--0-----7--0--0--0--0------8--0--0--0--0-----5--0--0--0--0------7--0--0--3--0--0 etc

    Is:

    D--DUDU-----D--DUDU-----D--DUDU-----D--DUDU-----D--DU--D--DU

That's some really good advice and explaination about the picking techniques used, Blo.
I also remember seeing the tab for The Final Countdown's solo and thinking those intro licks we're pretty wild. I never did stick with it or get them up to speed.
