    Default Marvel Studios

‘Shang-Chi’ Marvel’s First Asian Film Superhero Franchise

Marvel Studios is fast-tracking Shang-Chi to be its first superhero movie tentpole franchise with an Asian protagonist. The studio has set Chinese-American scribe Dave Callaham to write the screenplay, and Deadline hears Marvel is already looking at a number of Asian and Asian-American directors who want to do something as potentially monumental as was accomplished in Marvel’s first viable Best Picture candidate, Black Panther. That film tied into African and African American cultures and the sensibilities of its nearly all-black cast, with a black director in Ryan Coogler and writer in Joe Robert Cole. The goal here is to do a similar thing: introduce a new hero who blends Asian and Asian American themes, crafted by Asian and Asian American filmmakers.

After Marvel Studios’ unparalleled decade of success following Iron Man, many have wondered how Kevin Feige’s next iterations of superhero franchises will distinguish themselves. Clearly an important theme will be ethnic diversity and inclusion, in front of and behind the camera.

Callaham has strong credentials in the superhero and franchise-building realms and his own experiences as a Chinese-American will inform the Shang-Chi movie mythology, sources said. His recent work includes co-writing with Patty Jenkins and Geoff Johns the upcoming DC Warner Bros sequel Wonder Woman 1984, and he is writing Sony’s animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2. He also wrote initial drafts of Zombieland 2, which begins production in January, and created and produced Amazon’s recent action comedy series Jean-Claude Van Johnson, starring Jean- Claude Van Damme. Callaham also created the Expendables franchise as well as the story for the Legendary’s Godzilla reboot.

He’s got two comedies at Netflix: Callaham wrote the Black List-ed dark comedy caper script Jackpot, which Will Gluck will direct; and he wrote and is producing with Channing Tatum, Phil Lord & Christopher Miller, and Archer’s Adam Reed and Matt Thompson, the animated comedy America: The Motion Picture. Thompson is directing.

Shang-Chi first appeared in Special Marvel Edition #15 in December 1973, hatched by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin. The script will modernize the hero to avoid stereotypes that many comic characters of that era were saddled with. The comic launched around the time that Enter the Dragon became a global sensation and martial arts films raged. In the comics, Shang-Chi is the son of China-based globalist who raised and educated his progeny in his reclusive China compound, closed off to the outside world. The son trained in the martial arts and developed unsurpassed skills. He is eventually introduced to the outside world to do his father’s bidding, and then has to come to grips with the fact his revered father might not be the humanitarian he has claimed to be and is closer to what others call him: The Devil’s Doctor. He also might be centuries old. The deceit makes them bitter enemies.

Marvel Studios has worked with a stable of talented filmmakers from diverse backgrounds including Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, directing next year’s Captain Marvel with Brie Larson; Coogler, directing the Black Panther sequel; Taika Waititi, who directed Thor: Ragnarok; Chloé Zhao, who will direct The Eternals; and Cate Shortland, who will direct a stand-alone film for Marvel staple Black Widow starring Scarlett Johansson.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 first look reveals Coulson’s successor

Netflix might be cancelling Marvel shows left, right and centre, but given the recent renewal from ABC, we know we’ve got at least two more seasons of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to look forward to, beginning with season six this coming summer.

As we saw in the season five finale, the ailing Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) retired from his position as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and left to live out his final days in Tahiti with Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), and now TV Line has revealed his successor – Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie, played by Henry Simmons.

“Personally, I love the challenge of being the director of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” states Simmons about his character’s new role. “Mack has worked side-by-side with the people he now leads, and that works to his advantage — he’s one of them. But the one thing that can hinder Mack’s ability to lead is his reluctance to put the people he loves in the line of danger. As a result, this may lead to Mack’s toughest decision as director. What sacrifices will be made?”

The thirteen-episode sixth season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is set to air on ABC in summer 2019.

Just trailers, but I am a little underwhelmed with Brie Larson as Captain Marvel.

Hulu And Marvel Team Up For Four New Animated Shows

Big things are happening at Hulu today: in addition to the just-announced Devil In The White City adaptation from Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, the streaming network has also revealed they've partnered with Marvel for four (4) new animates series.

The first is Howard The Duck, based on the cigar-smoking, wisecracking character of the same name. Howard last made an appearance in the end-credits tag on James Gunn's Guardians of The Galaxy, and once headlined a feature film that's better left undiscussed here. The show's being shepherded to the screen by Kevin Smith and Dave Willis, who'll executive produce alongside Marvel TV's Jeph Loeb. Big day for Howard The Duck fans.

The second series is Marvel’s Tigra & Dazzler Show, to be co-written and executive produced by former Netflix talk show personality Chelsea Handler. According to Deadline, the series will revolve around the titular characters "as they try to get their superpowered heads, hands and hearts around life in the City of Angels."

Then there's Marvel’s Hit-Monkey and Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K., both of which are headed our way via Josh Gordon, Will Speck, Patton Oswalt (!!!) and Jordan Blum. The former revolves around "a pissed off Japanese snow monkey who tries to take on and take down Tokyo’s crime underworld with the ghost of an American assassin by his side", while the latter will deal with Marvel supervillain M.O.D.O.K. as he attempts to deal with his ego and family issues. It probably goes without saying that we're most excited about these two shows.

This is all very exciting news for fans of these characters, not to mention for fans of the creative forces behind each product. Which of the above are you most excited about? Sound off in the comments below, and stay tuned for updates on each of these shows as further updates become available.

Disney own's their own stake and Fox's stake in Hulu. Still surprised they wouldn't launch this on their streaming services.

This is all from Jeph Loeb who does Marvel Television. Totally separate from Marvel Studios.

Marvel Studios proper are developing the Loki and Scarlett Witch shows for Disney+.

Brie Larson Won't Allow The 'Captain Marvel' Media Tour To Be 'Overwhelmingly' White Or Male

    Emily Zanotti February 12, 2019

“Captain Marvel" star Brie Larson says she's determined to make sure the Marvel movie's upcoming press junket is diverse and female-led, pledging to Marie Claire UK that she will keep the tour from becoming "overwhelmingly" white or male.

Larson is starring as Carol Danvers in the Marvel universe's female-led superhero blockbuster, due out the first week of March. The hotly anticipated "Captain Marvel" draws on the character's long history, and should be a key element in the Marvel universe's next generation of films, but feminists — including Larson — are determined to make the movie a landmark for women.

“About a year ago, I started paying attention to what my press days looked like and the critics reviewing movies, and noticed it appeared to be overwhelmingly white male,” Larson told Marie Claire UK's Keah Brown, according to Fox News. “So, I spoke to Dr. Stacy Smith at the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, who put together a study to confirm that.”

"They put together a study that found that of the 100 highest-grossing movies in 2017, 67 percent of top critics were white males, less than 25 percent were white women, while 10 percent were men of color and 2.5 percent were women of color," the New York Post reports.

As a result, Larson says, she's started handpicking the journalists she works with, giving preference to journalists of color who, she believes, may not get the same opportunities as other entertainment reporters. She selected Brown, for example, because Brown is a freelance reporter who writes “about pop culture, disability, blackness and womanhood" (Brown has cerebral palsy).

Although Captain Marvel herself isn't an overt feminist (though she is a very powerful, accomplished woman before and after she gains superpowers), Larson confirmed recently that she has plans to make "Captain Marvel" a “big feminist movie.”

Bounding Into Comics reports that Larson announced her intent to Entertainment Tonight, which visited the set of "Captain Marvel" back in May.

"I had a meeting with Marvel and what we discussed is they wanted to make a big feminist movie," she told the entertainment television show.

The film's director, Anna Boden, was less aggressive about the movie's intent. "The story lends itself to it," Boden said. “We’re not trying to make this movie about all women. We can’t make it about all women’s journeys, but just be really true to this woman’s journey.”

Although Marvel promises an epic superhero flick in "Captain Marvel," fans — and particularly female fans, including your fair reporter — of the genre, do fear that turning Captain Marvel into a feminist icon the way Wonder Woman was marketed will have a detrimental effect on the character herself. Often, characters that are repurposed to be typically "feminist" (or "feminist" in the modern sense of the word) become stereotypes, betraying the decades of character development that takes place in their respective comic books before a movie ever premieres.

"Captain Marvel" hits theaters March 8.

I am going to start boycotting the NBA, as African Americans are 12.6% of the US population, but 74.4% of the NBA.

People would say "that's dumb", yeah, so is what she is doing.

I'm trying to picture being a regular geek comic dude and walking into a theater of radical feminists who have never even read a comic. LOL!
