I think Dreams is Sam's best vocal performance and is probably one of the best rock vocals ever.

Anyone ever heard the very ending of Would You Do It For Free off MTM? When it's almost completely faded out at around the 4:26 mark he does one of his most insane screams I've ever heard. Weird that it's on the fadeout and only audible if ya turn it way up at the end.

That's pretty high praise! Not that I disagree, mind you.

Well, he sang Dreams as a whole song, a lot higher than any of his other songs as far as the verses and chorus went, but for absolute highest notes? None of them are in Dreams. He did quite a few peppered through other songs that were higher than anything in Dreams.

The note at the end of 5150 comes to mind.

That said, I don't think the note in Down the Drain is one of his highest at all. Maybe one of the highest at that point in his career, but I think Dreams would be ahead of that one.

Also, the way he ends the song in Learning To See is ridiculously higher than Down the Drain.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

    High notes.

    Who cares.

My favorite Sammy is when he relaxes and sings in the pocket.

    "Best of Both Worlds".

"5150"(not the high at the end, the entire song he is chill)

Yeah no "Dreams" is insane and, as cool as "When the Hammer Falls" is, "5150" should've been #1.

I agree. Off the top of my head (without listening to ALL of Sammy's catalog back to back, LOL) I think "Dreams" just might be his best vocal performance of his career.

Also, if I were to ever to write my own "Top Van Halen Songs" list, I would probably have "Dreams" as the first Sammy era song that made the list.

Tcch. Karma Wheel is Sam's best vocal performance of his career. The nuances alone trump anything he did with Eddie.

    Karma wheel?

Despite the pretentious title, there are probably about thirteen people in the
    world that know "Karma Wheel."

Meanwhile, everyone on the planet knows "Dreams" was a career high for Hagar.

But the rookie from So-cal is gonna go with "Karma Wheel" for 1000, Alex.

Yeah, think of high notes as vocal guitar solos.

Guitarists get to show off what they can do, so do singers.

For songs where Sam sang really high for either the whole song or a good bit of it, Let Sally Drive is right up there with Dreams.

And my personal favorite, Salvation on Sand Hill. That's a kick ass tune.
