Sam is not what he used to be. Sam’s performance can be judged outside of a comparison with Dave – one has little to do with the other, especially considering their singing styles are very different.

That being said, I strongly disagree that this performance is typical or to be expected for guys their age. I’d put Sam in the 90 percentile of rock singers who are 70+. Most rockers north of 70 don’t even perform anymore so it really can’t be typical on that basis alone.

When I say Sam is amazing, I'm comparing him to 95% of guys at that age. Like the general population. It's not directed at Roth, mainly because ROTH IS NOT 71!!!!
In 2025, when DLR is 71, we can come back to this video, and A/B what Roth will sound like with this Sam vid. I must add that although some think he can do no wrong, Dave made the conscious decision to continue smoking cigarettes TO THIS DAY. So yes, Dave will most likely NOT be at Sam's level when he's 71, IF HE'S STILL ALIVE!

I never believe on dumping on singers as they age. Players do not have their instruments age except for singers. They are their instrument and age/genetics are what they are. It is good to give credit to old guys that win the genetic lottery and really sound well at such an advanced age when rock star expiration dates were never meant to be this stretched. Sam sounds really well and stays away from the notes he can't hit and just executes solidly. He sounds really good for his age, big kudos.

I'd rather see him something from Standing Hampton or HSAS. Sam is good on this but for me the song sucks. It has no intrinsic flaw or great moment, it is another ballad amongst so many from that era. Just generic and boring that has not aged as well as Sam's voice. I get it was popular but I think Sam has much better in his catalog that has aged better, mix it up more.

The Dave sucks etc... no idea why connected to this performance or anything Sam does. The only connection this is to Dave is it is a song that was a hard pass and rejected by him (along with other 51550 material) before his departure. That is kind of a stretch but OK I guess if you like the song to say haha for rejecting it??? Bizarre, but kudos to Sam

That was my fault. I saw this in the new posts box on the left of the screen and thought this was posted in main because the OP has a habit of posting Sammy stuff in main.

I watched the video and didnt think it deserved the ball washing that it got based on the reasons I listed and the only reason I brought Roth up is that some people don't seem to want to give him the same benefit of age that they give Sam.

If I had known this was in the Red Rocker forum I wouldn't have bothered with it, so I apologize for my original post.

    I'll see myself out...
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

Hey I'm good with the ball washing. Who ever expected when he is 71 you would still be able to see a song you love performed by the artist. I certainly do not love the song but man if you do this has to be beyond expectation after all these decades. Ball wash away man why they are still there to be washed.

This is a new one. So the performance sucks not because Sam sucks but because the song sucks? To each his own, WIL is one of my favorite songs by any artist.

I never said anything negative about the performance. I think it is very good. Yes you can perform a bad song well and vice versa. The performance good or bad does not alter the quality of the original song. The original point of wow at 71 great performance I absolutely agree with, I never said the performance sucked. That does not create a time machine and alter the original song however or change the fact I think he has other songs in his catalog that aged far far better that would be recipients of a strong performance. I complimented his performance and other parts of his catalog.

"When It's Love" is the song where EVH could finally let his "Eric Clapton" shine during the solo. It's also one of the better-produced songs on OU812. And one of the better VH love songs. Now some could maybe argue that VH should've never written ANY love songs, but think about it, wouldn't it have sounded phony if they were still saying "I live my life like there's no tomorrow" well into their 40s? They were all married with kids at that point. WIL accomplishes its mission well.

I'll admit being a sucker for the "na na na nas" at the end.
