Was thinking today about my favorite bands as a kid...if I remember correctly or had to guess I'd say:

    1983/2nd grade: Quiet Riot
    1984-1985/3rd-4th: Motley Crue
    1986/5th: Poison
    1987-1988/6th-7th: Whitesnake
    1988 cont./7th: Guns 'N Roses
1989/8th: Bobby Brown, my New Jack Swing era
1990/9th: No one, lost interest in music for the most part
1991/10th during Christmas break: VH FOREVER (always liked them before, but never clicked until one glorious day...)

P.S. Those are still in my Top 10 or close to it, God help me...

And even more impressive, they survived and THRIVED in the MTV era with their videos when looks became more important than ever. They actually got bigger.

That shows you just how strong their songs were. Compare them to another band with a dorky looking lead singer...Autograph. They had one hit and that was it. That lead singer just didn't fly on MTV. .....Though he certainly tried to fly in that video...and it came off as an epic fail. Worst leap from the drum riser in video history? (3:08)

Hahaaa yeah that was so daring of him!

I'm a huge fan of hair metal, or "Pussy Rock" as I call it (because that's all they sing about...well that and gypsies for some reason), and I can't stand that song. So lame. Sounds like a song that a fictional hard rock band sings in an unpopular '80s comedy (like "He's My Girl"). If you're an '80s pop metal band I don't like you, you got problems.

Some other lame wanna DLR jumps were from none other than Joe Elliott and Kevin DuBrow. Joe's was in one of the Pyro vids and can't remember what video DuBrow's was in. The funny thing about those were...they were trying to do eagle splits. It's about the equivalent of you or I trying to do one off of a chair.

I just don't get how our age group was into VH/Zep etc and then embraced hair metal.

Thank God for Metallica and EVEN Grunge for killin' that shit.
don't think I could disagree more with that assumption ... back in 81 when I was 13-14 they where hard edged punk mixed with old school kiss, not so sure 9 years where on the cutting edge of new music then, not to say you whereat listening to your parents Led Zeppelin, Van Halen etc records, but in 81 thats what attracted myself and friends my age at the time to the Crue, their first record was raw and we all thought it was punk mixed with hard rock ... "hair metal" was much much later when bonds like Nelson, phantom blue, slaughter, danger danger and the likes came to the party late and tried to cash in ... The crue brought glam to the 90's absolutely but they changed with each release with many copycat bands riding the Crues coat tails ... those are the ones that sucked the life out of the genre ... or and GNR 87b released that was a huge boot in the ass to everyone at the time ...

    Just my 2 cents

Yeah I agree Crue when they started out were not Hair Metal. For one Hair Metal didn't exist. They were a mix of KISS makeup with Alice Cooper goth and a heavy metal attitude. They coming on the scene was in a way similar to when GNR came out. They were gutter rats compared to more cleaner cut metal/rock bands. They were not to be confused with Poison later on down the road.

I was into hard rock/metal during that time and nobody I knew were going "these guys are f@gs" like when Poison came out. Shit Ozzy never would have gotten away with having them open for him.

When the Crue & even early Ratt hit the scene, it was before what i classify as Hair Metal (Poison, etc.)
It was Hard rock with a visual aspect, but the music on SATD & Ratt's EP & Cellar, were far removed
from the crap that would surface in their wake.

"Theater" seemed more like a shift towards 70's gam, but it kind of started the Hair Metal scene
    when you think about it.
The look, songs like "Home sweet Home."

Autograph were poor songwriters & looked goofy, but i love that tune (Turn up the radio).
    Great chorus in that one.

The guitarist was kind of Vito Bratta before Vito.
He did all the tapping, but all his solo's sounded meticulously worked out.

I still rock Turn Up The Radio but couldn't give you another song they did. I think I remember one where there was a video and it was Autograph on stage and the only people in the audience were Ozzy and Crue?

    Did I imagine that?

I think they had a vid for "Blondes in black cars."

Every song was just pedestrian crap.

But "Radio" was such a killer tune, from beginning to end.

Reminds me of the Cinderella vid (Save me), where the hot chicks come running past them
after they finish the song, and head straight for Bon Jovi.

I had such a crush on the brunette of the "wicked stepsisters."
