I own a 5150 head and for the life of me could never understand how folks use it for classic/hard rock. The preamp distortion is all fizz where I want power crunch (Non MV Marshalls). I bought the amp because it was Ed's amp and Peavey did a great marketing job in making me think it had Ed's tone - which to me is the overdriven power tubes of a Non MV Marshall. It's a great amp for lead playing IMO.

The head sits in my closet but when I did play it the distortion was never past 4. I got it back in the 90s and brought it out from time to time but it never lived up to my Jubilee. At least for the type of rock I play.

I don't get it either. That's why I never used my 5152. I recently sold it to a metal guy and as far as I know, he's really happy with it. Better than it collecting dust...

    Also...I think I'm going to buy another 6L6 100S and sell my 50w EL34

Hmm, odd...my 5150 Combo has only five pre amp tubes

(And weighs about 184.5 pounds, LOL!)

Also, if that "Mini Head" was sitting on mini 1x12 cabinets, wouldn't all those knobs have to be super tiny

    Hmm...

And if the 5150 II combo is really switchable from 60 to 120 watts wouldn't it need four power tubes? I was waiting for someone besides me to catch that.
VH III is Ed's solo album. So everybody who keeps saying they wish he'd do one needs to stfu and listen to III. Then stfu again.

I thought that as well, yet never saw this catalog before. Nor have I ever seen a Peavey 5150II combo in person. I did own two of the original combos and thought they kicked ass! 60watts was more than plenty for the gigs we played, and sometimes not even mic'd through a P.A. system.

    Yeah, I think you're right.
That catalog page may be full of amps that never existed, probably printed just before the big ugly Edward/Peavey divorce, when Ed took his precious "5150" fondue pot moniker over to Fender's house , and then all those amps became 6505s.

I still use my 5150 combo with my cover band. Never had issues with getting a milder tone from it. Its noisy but use a Boss noise suppressor which limits most of it. Also use stock Eurotubes as well so maybe that helps. Anyway I can dial in a tone and use my volume knob to play milder stuff with no problem. Of course its not Fender clean but nobody really cares. Thing has fallen in water puddles, dropped and have had power surges and still works.

I also used the white Boss NS pedal in the effects loop, which tamed a lot of the hiss on the lead channel. Worked pretty good. Those amps were built like tanks. I saw one guy who put casters on his, which I probably should've done...

My combo also has 5 pre-amp tubes. I think that was a typo as one of the changes with the 5150 II, was that they added another tube. I totally agree about the weight lol.
