I think that is proof that Ed must be tone deaf from all the years. When that shit happens, and you realize it's you, it's either figure it out quick, or stop playing. Can't believe his tech didn't realize the mistake and run out there with the correct guitar.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

He does. Check the vid at 1:47... Tech is just offstage trying to hand Ed another guitar and Ed just shrugs him off.

Actually Ozz is singing better right now than he did during his last tour with Sabbath where he was completely off key.

Shirtless Ed doesn't sweat details like this. lol And honestly, while it might stand out on youtube, for those at the show the overall volume probably covered up most of his guitar tuning fiasco. Many people are quite tone deaf and although they could have noticed something wasn't quite right, they might not have known what it was. With his solo being up front in the mix it actually didn't sound so bad. Yes agreed that Dave was great on that tour. I saw them early in Philly and then seventh row from the stage inside the "S" at a 2008 Hershey date, after Ed had recovered from his "mystery ailment". Those 2008 dates might have been the last time this version of the band was firing on all cylinders, including Dave. He was really hungry and well-prepared for that Van Halen gig, probably after 1988 or so, and it really showed on that tour.

The keys are carrying the melody anyway, just find the key instead of
    playing to the record.
Is Eddie really an "ad-lib" guy though? I thought he played a lot of stuff off the cuff in the early days for sure. Those fills in Beautiful Girls certainly sound like he ad-libbed them. But I got the sense he got more "prepared" as time went on.

So Ed's guitar is the culprit here, evidently.
That makes more sense than the "the track was off key" explanation.

Precisely why so many of us think the band was easily at their best on the first four or five tours. The whole band became more prepared, or rehearsed in their performances, particularly from 1991 on up to the present.

Very true, But seems pretty extreme to play a whole song a semitone out to prove a point/because you prepared it that way, he could've easily adjusted. maybe we can put it down to a shirtless EVH thing to do, although I get the feeling he'd do the same regardless. Interesting guy that EVH

Oh I dont think he would do that now. I think the EVH in that video was inebriated and being purposely obstinate.

And props to Dave in the Jump vid. He did sound about as good as I’d heard him in probably 20 years on that tour (based on vids and when I saw them). I wouldn’t say great, but a far cry better than his solo years in the 90s and early 00s, and certainly worlds better than 2011 and beyond.
    SOME VH LINKS CLASSICS

"Sammy is fat, Dave is bald, Mike is next in line to be the Pope, Eddie is a drunk, Wolfie is fat, Gary is gay, CVH is VH, Mike is VH, Sammy can outsing Dave on a tequilla hangover, Eddie is a meth head, How Many Say I is the worst VH song ever, Up for Breakfast is a close second, Dave was horrible at radio and everybody hates the assless chaps.
Ok I think that covers everything." Ziggysmalls

"I sense that some of our newer passengers may be nervous due to the sudden turbulence. Please be seated, this is simply a normal part of the periodic ride.
I didn't say we'll get to the destination, but until Alex comes out a says what a complete waste of carbon DLR is, we're still climbing, so strap yourselves in.
Those of you who have been on this ride before, the hottie in the mini will be around shortly with your drinks......." Red

Eddie is absolutely and 'adlib' guy. Practically every solo recorded has been a compilation of ad libs in the studio.

Backing track has nothing to do with it.

Ed's guitar, for whatever reason, is tuned to D standard instead of E flat.

It's even more apparent on Eruption/ATBL.

Too bad the blowers weren't on. Could've stopped the show and got Ed a different guitar.
