EEAS is hands down a superior album compared to 5150. All 4 members of the EEAS band killed it on the entire album. Track for track, EEAS was the better album with Big Trouble being an incredible deep cut.

However, others are correct when they say 5150 is the best track on 5150.
Well then, that settles it - Big Trouble wins! I wish you could have been the first to respond to this thread and saved us all the (big) trouble of commenting.

Wasn't a big fan of 5150 until I heard the LWAN version, I really liked Big Trouble from the get go, So I'm going with BT even though I don't LOVE that song.

Hmmm, based on your comment, you should have stopped reading the thread posts with all the 5150 by a mile comments early on.....

I'll go with 5150, because I like the riff better. Absolute killer solo by Vai though.

5150(song) is another career high point in a career that was almost all high points up until that time. This is the song I was expecting/hoping/wishing for after Girl Gone Bad, Drop Dead Legs, House of Pain and Top Jimmy on the previous album. Hard rock as an art form. Next Level Ed, still evolving from past success and rolling forward. The intro to this song thrills me almost as much as Eruption and Spanish Fly did, but here we were seven albums into his career and he was still finding ways to make our jaws drop open, in a new way. I still to this day listen to that intro 2-3 times before letting the song play out, and the rest of the song is no let down from there, including that epic solo. Perfect song, a masterpiece!

Even when I wasn't feeling any love for the Sammy era, I could still listen to this song. Sammy sounds great here, no yelping and screeching and unobtrusive lyrics that ride along with the song instead of detracting.

Any other song off of that album vs Big Trouble(which is excellent itself) and it may have been a fair fight.

When both albums came out I was blown away because they're both incredible. The way I saw it, Dave leaving and hooking up with the Eat 'Em 'N Smile band was a force multiplier and a big win for fans. There was no down side. It was like VH X2.

I love 5150 for all of the reasons stated, but I'll have to go with BT in the poll. Very timely as well, since I have the EEAS cd in a car I'm getting back on the road, and I was cranking it multiple times the other night. I can only appreciate Vai in a band setting like that, and it was certainly a jaw-dropping solo. Perhaps one of the top rock guitar solos ever recorded, containing the best or worst hooks of the 1980's, depending on one's musical opinions. Vai's playing is excellent while his tone is certainly passable for rock on that album, with a lot of different flavors as required by each song. Someone else mentioned Vai's tone, and I'm not sure what it is that doesn't seem quite right as there is a lot of processing to the signal. Maybe at the core it's just the Ibanez guitars and Dimarzio pickups. Ed wins for certain on rock guitar tone. And if the poll was LWAN 5150 versus BT I could go either way depending on the day.

I'm sure back then Vai was still using his Charvel green meanie.

Just listened to Big Trouble again. Fuck that solo is incredible.

Looking back on it, my comment is a bit "jerky" and probably deserved an equally snarky retort.

I think it's totally fine to prefer Big Trouble - that first album by Dave and the band he formed was phenomenal. But considering that this is a Van Halen fan site and most consider 5150 to be one of Eddie's best compositions post-1985, I think comments like this do raise my eyebrow:

Big Trouble is an incredible song with some out of this world guitar playing. I as you enjoy 5150 more, I think it is incredible, but I can understand how someone would like Big Trouble more.

I like a lot of songs by other bands better than 5150, doesn't make it an insult that I do.

IMO, a better poll would be Why Can't This Be Love vs Goin' Crazy. I would vote for Goin' Crazy. Easily.
