I gotta admit, that was pretty bad. If I saw that live that'd ruin the song for me.

I don't mind it. He missed a couple of the harmonics and the unison bends in the solo. But pretty good tone.

Can you imagine how tough that gig would be? You are playing songs from one of the most admired guitar players of all time....while a screen behind you shows that guitar player in action while you play it! You would have to feel the "judging" every second.

I suppose Sammy could recruit an Eddie clone or something...but what about the other songs they do? If he got Eddie himself, it wouldn't sound like the record on the Sammy songs or the Zep songs.

I still like that album. Funny to think that Ted was THE guitar hero to the masses when Eddie showed up.

Like someone said, there's something always off with Vic's timing and phrasing. I don't want him to sound like Eddie, but I'd like him to sound like a good Vic.

considering Vic was hired because he was not like Eddie I think for the most part he does an ok job on most of the stuff. I did not watch the above posted video, that's just a general statement.

I was watching a Dave video on youtube the other day and one of the posters was ripping Steve Vai for how he played some of the Ed stuff.....seriously, you can't win in that situation no matter who you are.

No you canít really win in a comparison with Eddie, but I also agree in that there is something always off with Vic on the Eddie stuff enough that it takes the image of a decent guitar player and lowers it quite a bit

That said, itís not hurting Sammy at all and I give him props fir being loyal at the end of the day itís his choice

Iíd like someone who could handle the Eddie stuff, but I donít follow the circle so I guess it doesnít matter

Maybe I missed it but who are Ed and Al playing with?

    Oh right. Nobody.

Well, if it sounded like that performance I would prefer they stop.

Unfortunately Ed and Al have become musical recluses. I wish they'd go out and play more often because they still sound great when they're actually playing.

But they don't seem to want to so it is what it is.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

    Yeah that’s pretty sad.

I’d say that makes them David Lee Roth fans.

I can never listen to any live material of Sammy's because of Vic. He's not awful, but he just doesn't sit right. It's most apparent on the VH stuff, but there's something off about his playing overall. I'm very interested in what hardcore VH fans that are not guitarists think when they hear him playing.

I understand Sam might not be able to sing that song in the original key in the midst of a 90+ minute set, but they key isn't doing Sam any favors either. It's in a weird spot where it's kinda monotonous and lacks punch. He's still an incredible performer for his age, and I'm sure it'd be less noticeable live.

    I don't have a problem with Vic.
VH music is so ingrained in me that of course I know when the parts are played differently, or even 'wrong', yet I still like that others are performing their songs.

Like those YT acoustic versions of Dave era stuff. People seem to like those "artist interpretations" of HAIL or piano versions of Spanish Fly etc., yet are they totally accurate? Nope. Yet it seems like they get a pass because they are Roth era songs.

Steve Vai, a master musician, even put his own spin on VH covers. Vic is Vic, and there's only one Eddie. No big deal...

I played a gig with a band who covered Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do), with a female singer... Already different, then the guitar player did the the opening riff with power chords on the A & D strings. Sooooo not like the recorded song, yet I thought 'Wow... How cool to hear this band do their version of a Sammy era VH tune that I love!'.

"Van Halen was never about the singer..." - A very wise fan.

Agree 100%- You said it absolutely right.....it's because those certain rock fans commenting are armchair critics...very limited one dimensional narrow minded prejudice & permanent tunnel vision....can't see or appreciate what they are listening too....always a contest have to make a comparison....for whatever ridiculous reason...

Yeah- ....& then the exact same armchair critics will say they're cheap copycat hack tribute artists.....

No matter how good they sound....It's not Eddie!!!

    Well no fucking shit bozos....ugh.

God forbid rock fans could actually admire & enjoy the live performance as it is at the time.

It wasn't as bad as I was expecting, seems a hard sound to duplicate live..it's also audio off a cell phone
