I don't see any signs of a "career"... He filled an empty slot in what will most likely be the final era of an aging 70's rock and roll super group. How many youngsters are out there filling slots like this on tour or albums of fading 70's/80's big names..? A lot.

He ain't no Dale Earnhardt Jr, Jason Bonham, Dweezil Zappa, etc carrying on a family legacy... more like a kid still playing with his daddy's toys at this point and has little of his own magic to stand on.

Careers involve working and producing something... two key ingredients missing from this scenario.

Well said and I agree with the post about Wolf being responsible for the past decade of VH.. I look forward to hearing whatever he's created. But if I don't, no biggie as there's a shit ton of other very good music to enjoy if you look and listen hard enough.

    Dweezil is a good example.

I remember that kid was ripping it up & putting out records in his teen years.
Frank Zappa's shadow looms large, yet Dweezil carved out his own thing &
really connected with people like me via MTV and the Guitar mags.

He had that Zappa sense of humor, and just seemed like a dude you could
    hang with.

But he kept creating, even starting a new band with his brother in the 90's,
then full circle back to Frank.

But Dweezil always put out music & toured.

At this point, it doesn't yet feel like Wolf has that Dweezil gene, for lack of a
    better word.

But Wolf is more the every man too, which is also relatable, where Dweezil
was kind of a pin-up & nailing young actresses.

    What's my point?

    I have no fucking idea...

Our definitions of career may be different. My definition is working in whatever your chosen profession for as long as you wish, until you are able to retire. So yes, i would say he’s started his career. And if he wanted, it might be over as well.

I'll concede that technically you are correct...

I guess I have difficulty calling playing in your dad's band starting at 17 years old for 3 tours and a record wrapping up at age 24... a "career".

I'm leaning more towards a "hobby"... The last 3 years have produced a white board with x's... lots of nicely organized x's...

His hobby produced more $$ than my career has to date. If I had his money I'd sit on my ass too

Yeah, but are you suggesting that inheriting big money or winning the lottery would be a valid "career" too as long as they generated more money than most people make at work?

Everyone's different but I just can't relate to the idea that life's goal is to simply acquire enough money in order to be as inactive and unproductive as possible.

Almost no highly successful people think that way. That's the irony, most of the people who make tons of money would never think of stopping what they do regardless of how much they have. But again, there's no right or wrong to it, I've always felt that people should do or not do what they want provided they don't do so at others' expense.

I like the Teddy Roosevelt philosophy, live a vigorous life.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

A man's rights rests in three boxes: the ballot box, the jury box, and the cartridge box

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

in one sense you are right but remember Dweezil and Moon Unit were all over MTV for awhile, I think MU was even a VJ for awhile so he had a bit of a head start over where Wolf is.

when it comes to his solo record, I don't expect a thing. I hope he's happy with whatever he eventually puts out. With the name Van Halen he's going to get shit from some people regardless of what the product actually is.

Very likely. a recognizable name can be a huge advantage but it can also be a huge disadvantage. There'll almost certainly be at least some level of negative blowback from casual VH fans who will hear it and bash it for not being "VH 1" again, even if it's interesting.

I'm really interested in what it'll be called, or if "Van Halen" will even be prominent in the packaging or marketing (to what degree there will be any).
