Also the same year as Sister Sledge's "We Are Family". Let's add this to the mix.
    Right here I say....

I chose II, but "Highway" is another fave of mine from the late 70's.

VHII all the way. I love H2H as well, but that was the beginning of Mutt Lange ruining the raw fury of their best albums, Let There Be Rock and Powerage, and turning more to a polished hard rock/metal sound.

And for some reason, Bon's voice just didn't sound as good on H2H as it did the first four albums. For me, Mutt Lange is one of the most overrated producers. At least he didn't bring his damn idiotic drum machine in the studio with him when he produced AC/DC like he did on Pyromania.

Both great albums but I gotta go with VH2.

I’m afraid the public at large would disagree and prefer the AC/DC record. Which sold more?

    I think VH2 is at 5M and H2H is at 7M.

I gotta give VH2 the edge, since, well, we are on the VHLinks.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

I`d be lying if I said HTH didn`t have a more polished sound than the stuff that came before it but I feel thats what makes it so great. To my ears it still has that raw AC/DC sound just refined and I think the little background vocals that they use sound much better than on previous albums . It`s still stomping four on the floor AC/DC with the cranked Plexi tone. Wheather you like Mutts work or not pretty much everything he touched turned to gold or shall I say multi platinum . He definitely put his stamp all over Def Lepps Pyromania but he also produced the album before that High N Dry which has some of the best cranked Marshall Plexi tones on tape . I don`t think his ex Shania Twain had another hit after he stopped producing her . I love LTBR and Powerage but I prefer HTH I guess we`ll say for it`s more polished sound . I know Mutt didn`t produce this one but honorable mention to the ferocious live album If You Want Blood You`ve Got It , my first AC/DC album way back in `79

I think it would be close , the public at large is probably way more familiar with Back In Black than Highway To Hell

I've always felt Bon's best vocals were on Highway to Hell.

Just listen to the first line in "If you want Blood."
He was pushed on that album by Mutt, and i think it really paid off.
"Shot down in flames" is another killer performance, the title track, Girls got Rhythm...

His vocals were stunning to me.

As much as i loved those older records, i always felt he was way more laid back,
    vocally, on them.
Highway has him just attacking, but still being Bon.

I thought Mutt really captured their sound on Highway.
It was still completely AC/DC, yet everything was in tune and recorded perfectly.
Those guitar tones were so warm & mean.

Agree to disagree with both of you, Jape and 51501984. It's all good. Some prefer polished, some prefer a more raw sound. I think the guitar tones the band had on LTBR and Powerage were by far the best the band ever had. After that was of course still great, but I definitely don't like it as much. And I'd say the guitar tones on LTBR, their ultimate album, were THE very definition of warm and mean. For me, LTBR is AC/DC's WACF.

As far as Bon's vocals, yes I can see where maybe Mutt pushed him, which is why I probably didn't like it as much as the previous albums. Some of the vocals come across more as just screaming and pushing his voice past where it should've been. Obviously not everywhere on the album, as Bon was still Bon, and he's my second all time favorite rock singer after Dave. But I'm comparing Bon to himself, and I just preferred him on the records before H2H. And maybe it's just my imagination running wild, because we all know what eventually happened, but I've always felt like maybe the booze was starting to affect the way Bon sounded on that record.

In the end, I still prefer H2H to every AC/DC album that came after, because it still has Bon and his sense of humor and wit in the lyrics and vocals. I love Brian Johnson and how respectful he has always been to Bon's legacy, but he's just no Bon in either the vocals or lyrics.

Every single song on H2H is a classic. That's why it's above previous AC/DC records.
I'd give the edge to H2H, a very slight edge.
