It's nails, but I can't put it ahead of side 1 of either VH I of FW.

VHII is my favorite Dave and OU812 my favorite from Sam. Never picked up on the connection of the second album for each.

Iím surprised to hear VHII being described as ďdarkĒ. I find it concise, light, and fun. VHI by comparison is much more intense, complex, and difficult to digest - all of those things make it objectively better than VHII but thatís why music is a personal preference type thing.

I think the darkness on II has more to do with his awesome tone.

VHI was much brighter, II had a meaner, browner sound.

I like the contrast between that tone and the sunnier lyrics, though LUTS is menacing.

IMO, Van Halen's greatest moment put to tape is the 2:00-3:05 outro of BU!:

VH II was my favorite album the 1st couple years I was into the band. I still love it, but now I rank it after VH, FW, and 1984.
I consider OU812 a very good album, but not near their best at all. I do love "Cabo Wabo." That song just has a kick-ass vibe, and I considerate one of my all-time favorites.

That is a pretty awesome final 65 seconds. I'm sort of partial to the last minute of this one ...

    My favorite ending ever!

I remember my first spin of II and just being blown away by how cool
    the song & ending was.
I had no idea how he was making those sounds, but i knew this guy was
the best rock guitarist i'd ever had.

But, again, the entire band was perfect.

it's funny, I was actually thinking of these 2 records a few weeks ago and my thought was that even though they are the sophomore efforts from both major era's of the band it's really almost impossible to compare them when you look at the grand scheme of things. VHII is a great record (as I've said previously) but some of the songs had been performed dozens upon dozens of times while the band was on the club circuit. A lot of the bugs had been worked out, they had a veteran producer and engineer on board and in essence they did everything right while making that record. the only thing I honestly don't like is the cover of You're no Good, not because I think it's a bad song or anything I just had something very bad happen in my young life while listening to that song and no matter what I do I associate that event with that song. I just don't listen to it. I love Outta Love Again, Bottoms Up, LUTS...all great songs.

OU812 is one of my favorite records, like I said before I was 15 or 16 when it was released so I was at a very, very impressionable age in as far as my musical tastes. I loved that record from the first minute I listened to it. I remember going to get it right after school and the guy at the record store was in awe at how well it was selling, he actually had to go in back and get a cassette for me and my buddy cause the rack was empty. Looking back, I think that despite some of the great material on the record I think they (the band) just did a whole lot of things 'wrong" while recording it. First, from what I understand all of the material was fresh (brand new). I think almost everyone on here would agree that the songs on 5150 that the band performed on LWAN had more of an edge to them, they were looser and just generally rocked a little more than the recorded versions. My point being I wish VH had taken some time and written the songs prior to recording them and performed them a few times (I know this is an incredible impracticable scenario as VH were one of the biggest hard rock bands in the world and there is no way they could perform these songs in any kind of covert way but it still IMHO would have helped out with the final product). Obviously, they dropped the ball by not having a real producer in the studio with them. I mean honestly when i get in my car and I blast OU812 it sounds pretty good all by itself but when you compare it with another record that's where the production problems come to light....it's a very "quiet" record where FUCK and Balance just hit you in the face right off the bat you kind of have to really listen with OU812. I also think they really, really fucked themselves kicking off the MOR tour when they were still recording the record. Lots of people bitch about stuff like SOI and I know in Sam's book he says they just fucked around and threw it on the record but I would bet that some of that stuff was done more because of the time crunch than anything else, I know Al didn't like it and I think Donn Landee didn't really like it so if time had allowed maybe they would have went back and re cut it, who knows? I do still think there are some GREAT songs there. I don't view WIL as a ballad, I view it as a peppier rock song and in that light it's fucking awesome, it's not really a full representation of what the band was but it's a great song. The intro alone is incredible. First 4 songs are gold to me. AFU is outstanding to me, it is my favorite Alex song, I love the fills. I love Cabo Wabo, I think there are parts of that song where Sam is singing, Ed and mike are harmonizing in the background and the guitar and drums sound perfect. there is not a song on the record I don't like TBH.....maybe APB but as I've said many times, I think you have to listen to the original to get what they were going for and IF what they say about recording it was true (one mike in the room, all of them playing at once, one take with Ed overbudding the piano later) it's a cool track.

bottom line, they are both great records, recorded at very, very different times in the bands lives and they're both an incredible representation of what a great, great band VH was when they were young and hungry (VHII) and when they were a little older but still had a lot to prove (OU812).

VH II and OU812 contain my favorite track #3's from their respective eras ...
