With Harpo on this one. Most of these are just too derivative. That Struts melody is exactly the same as a Strokes song. I mean, not even a little bit different. Babymetal fakery and gimmickry. Old dogs Pearl Jam. Some of these are ok, but rock need bands that think outside of the box.

If the heart of rock & roll is still beating, the pulse is definitely fleeting.

Elvis may have had a touch of Bing Crosby here and there, but he was doing something no one had heard before.
The Beatles may have had the Scottie Moore guitar style and Everly Brothers vocals, but they took it in a whole new direction.
Led Zep was doing something not heard before.
Van Halen had not been heard before.
    U2 was new.
    Metallica was new.
    Nirvana was new.

All along the way there were new things we hadn't heard before coming at us all the time. No one sounded like Boston before they showed up. The Police. The Cars. Alice in Chains.
Even No Doubt was something new for one album at least.

    The 60s didn't sound like the 50s, the 70s didn't sound like the 60s, the 80s didn't sound like the 70s, the 90s didn't sound like the 80s.

As good as these songs are, I can't help noticing it sounds like music from the past. Even Baby Metal sounds like Dream Theater with a better singer (yeah...I said it! lol...). We know who GVF sounds like of course.

Everyone seems to be going back to the well of the past for their equipment and styles. Really bringing back memories of the Stray Cats. Sure they showed up and Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis were still playing gigs in the 80s, but that didn't mean the 50s was "not dead". What kept rock alive during that time was that the 80s was doing something new that got kids excited.

Many of us remember that rock was "dying" in the late 70s. (that was the rumor anyway) Lots of bands were up there with a Les Paul like some of these bands. Then a kid showed up who had built his own guitar and then it was time for everyone to start playing a Strat style guitar with a humbucker and play it in a whole new way. New life was injected into the genre.

When's the last time you heard a rock band doing something you've never heard before? I'm struggling to think of one. Surely someone is new and I'm just missing it.
i was really hoping to have 1 thread on this site without fighting/arguing/or negativity. just wanted a place for people to post some recent kick ass rock songs. guess that's not happening.

as much as i appreciate your thoughts/definition of what rock truly is or isn't, maybe one thread can just be about having fun, celebrating the fact that their are tons of bands most people on this site enjoy are still thriving. (Maiden, Guns, Metallica...)

Rock is dead for about 95% of the USA and Canada.... Sorry Hack. We are the last survivors.

Looks like COULDA thinks this is the only guy that can save rock!

I understood you. That's why I posted vids of old war horses and young pumps from recent gigs. Rock is still out there.

    Exclamation

I’ve become friends recently with a guitar prodigy who started making waves when he was twelve years old. The kid can flat out play , no two ways about it. His musical knowledge is pretty damn impressive too. Idolizes Blackmore and can play anything from Beck to Eddie to Allman to you name it. He’s playing with some talented guys in his band who are the same age. Lots of industry musicians know of him and want him on their records.

I have said many times here that rock is dying a slow death and that there is nothing on the horizon. Hanging around these kids and seeing the kids I see at shows has changed my outlook.

This kid and his band love everything we grew up on and before, they do their research and dig deep into the history. They have introduced me to a lot of younger cats just like them too. They fucking dig Greta Van Fleet and The Struts and the best part is that they hear the influences and search them out.

Their response to detractors who say it’s not new or it’s too familiar is, “So what? It fucking rocks”.

I think we sometimes forget what it was like when we were kids and just discovering the music we love. I have changed my outlook and no longer feel like it’s over.

Maybe take Smokey’s advice and “Let the music take your mind Ooh just release and you will find”

If you look outside of America and Canada, there are still many metal and hard rock fans in Asia, South America and Europe. One band that comes to mind that I really like is from Finland; Stratovarius. I would call it melodic metal, like Europe or Yngwie, but with insane instrumentals. Not for everyone, but as a guitar player, I dig their stuff.

Saw these guys twice as openers, one for the Winery Dogs, the other time for Spocks Beard.
Great stuff (think they're from Atlanta).
