    Default Thoughts on preamp pedals?

So I'm a pedal junkie. It's become a hobby just to buy them and replace them on my board for the hell of it. My latest obsession is overdrive/preamp. I have five or six laying around.

Currently I'm running an Echoplex Preamp (always on) into a Sweet Baby Overdrive and my EVH 5150. Or sometimes I use amp distortion.

My question is about the Preamp. No complaints. Love this thing. But I'm thinking of trying an Xotic BB Preamp or AC Booster. I know some of you probably use these pedals, and I want to know what you think of those two pedals as replacements for the Echoplex.

    Have at it! And thanks!

I'm not a huge pedal guy when it comes to overdrive/distortion units, but the exception is Bogner's Ecstasy Red and Blue preamp pedals. They offer superb toneshaping....dont have that 'flubby', or mismatched character that a lot of pedals can add...especially in the EQ section. They really sound like an integrated part of the amp.
    Not cheap...but very good units.

On topic topic for me. I've been thinking about selling my Orange TH30 and getting something more Marshall like. The Orange is a bit dark for my tastes now and I find myself using pedals in the front, Friedman BE-OD and a boost, instead of the amp gain, to get a sound I like.

But maybe a preamp pedal, using the 4 cable method, could be the go instead. Like one of these for example.

Cool pedal. Looks like it would cost as much as an amp, tho. Lot of options. Particularly good with humbuckers, in my opinion.

They are about $1000 cheaper than the equivalent 22w head.

I had an Xotic BB for a while. It does a lot. It's a tweaked Tube Screamer circuit with more gain, more volume, better EQ options. I'd say it would do anything your Echoplex preamp pedal does and then some.

Follow up. I bought one. It is indeed a cool pedal. I intend to keep the Echoplex in the chain because I mainly use it to sweeten clean tone and then build off of that.

But I DON'T necessarily like it better than the Sweet Baby, which is a $35 pedal brand new. Probably not as sturdy, but it is a very cool sounding pedal, especially for my application (tone shaping). And I DO like being able to tweak bass and treble.

What level do you guys set the mxr echoplex preamp at for early van Halen? I know it says in the manual if set above 7 it introduces some breakup, do you set it above this or do you use it more as a clean boost?

I have mine in the front of my chain and I keep the knob on about 9 o'clock all the time. That's the best setting for a really sweet clean tone and for leaving on all the time. But that's with my specific set up and amp (Peavey Classic 50). I should also mention that I play at low volume, usually. Home and small gigs. If you play loud, your amp will do more of the work, and you can probably afford a lower setting. Or if you're not using a lot of pre-amp distortion, you may want to turn it all the way up.

I use a pedal and/or a fair amount of pre-amp distortion. So it's brown but not as "clean" as, say, the 1984 tone.

Another update. Sold the BB Preamp and am about to try the Mad Professor Little Green Wonder. Tubescreamer type pedal with a unique "Body" knob for tweaking mids and highs. Should be fun.

Still using the Echoplex as an always-on pedal. The tone-chasing continues.

So to understand you correctly, you have the pedal set to 3 which would equal 9 o'clock? Does it even boost at this setting? The manual states that at 5 it is at 0db of gain, at a level of 7 it starts to induce light clipping, are you set at 9 on the dial which would be 11db of boost or at 9 oclock which is possibly lowering the output? Thanks for the help, just trying to figure out what people do with this pedal.

My bad. I meant 3 o'clock. I have it turned almost all the way up. It does induce some clipping, but I have a compressor in front of it, so it's minimal. Juices the clean signal, adds meat. My clean sound is still very clean. And it still adds girth to dirty tones. I don't really use it as a boost. I'm not getting any volume increase out of it. I use it to shape tone.
