Easy to pick the top 3 or albums. But to narrow that down to the Best, it can't be done. Too much subjectivity, acoustic over electric, and other things. Can't do it. There are EVH gems on each CVH release...

I do think the relative commercial failure of Fair Warning (compared to the sales of VH, VHII and WACF) caused WB to put some pressure on VH to come up with a more "radio friendly" album.

Playing wise, Iím going to say Diver Down. 3 Instrumental tracks that are Awesome, Little Guitars, Full Bug, Secrets, Hang em High (fantastic songs), plus some of the most diverse playing in the entire VH catalog from Ed on DD. Yea, a lot of covers, but still excellent playing on those, and I love Edís tone on this album.

Composition wise Fair Warning is better though, but overall vibe from the album is a little dark.

I think FW is the undisputed champ. I would rank Van Halen and 1984 at 2a and 2b, VH II at 3, Balance at 4, and WACF at 5.

II needs to be above I, because he expanded his style.

He kept all the fire & speed of the debut, but added new techniques.

    I disagree.

"Spanish Fly" made "Eruption" sound like Jimmy Page's "Heartbreaker" solo!

And the mind warping velocity & stun gun shredding in solo's from LUTS & DOA,
    are Next LEVEL, indeed.

His solo in YNG is still, to this day, one of his most inventive solos as well.

Plus, that incredibly melodic intro to WIL...

It’s funny, but I no longer really listen to the Roth era stuff as individual albums since I first ripped the 6 album 2001 remasters and more recently since I bought the HiRes 192/24 Roth album downloads. All the individual songs are on one file folder as well as being burned onto a Blu-ray disc to play on my Oppo BD player and I usually have the songs on random and rarely is there a jarring transition from say, something from 1979 to a song from 1984. I really no longer have a favorite album.

That said, I really think Ed peaked creatively by 1981. His rhythm playing continued to become more refined through the 80’s but his inventiveness tailed off.

You can make a case for any one of the first six. Ed was stellar every time.

Ditto. If some kid wanted to know what the big deal with EVH was, I'd point em to any of those. Actually, I'd probably recommend certain tracks, as that's how music is consumed anymore. Pressed, I'd say VHI, as that's where it all started and the record that changed rock guitar over night. You can literally tell the difference between any other rock record recorded before or after that album.
VHII has some great playing, but I never liked it as much sonically, and some of the songs don't move me as much.

Good points about Diver Down. Not my fave Ed tone, but he was in good form in spite of the direction the album took. I was always a FW guy, but I think that's because it was pretty innovative and creative at the time. The first time I heard the MS open, Unchained, the textures and off the wall solo in HAIL, the experimental OFOTD, the sleeper smoker STIL... That said, is it his best soloing?
Unchained barely has one. And songwriting-wise, I'm not sure it holds up - Dirty Movies, Sinner's Swing... Sue me.

Personally might prefer 84 for the playing alone. GGB is just a tour de force. All the other stuff others have mentioned. His most broad playing, in a way.

Rarely listen to VH anymore either unless it pops up in the workout mix. Even then, it's selected tracks I've bothered to put on the phone. Most of my casual listening is ambient electronic stuff anymore. Good to work, fuck or dream to. Sue me twice.
