    Default BABY CHARLIE GARD CASE

I posted this here in order to not take away from the American Healthcare Act thread

‘I Thought This Was Supposed to Be Independent!’: Baby Charlie Gard’s Parents Walk out of Court

by Victoria Friedman 13 Jul 2017

The parents of Charlie Gard walked out of a High Court hearing after the baby’s father, Chris Gard, accused the court of partiality after disputes over the growth of Charlie’s head – an indicator of the boy’s brain development.
The case returned to the High Court after reports of new evidence from doctors in the United States who said experimental treatment could improve Charlie’s life.

Two hours into Thursday’s hearing, after disputes over whether baby Charlie’s head had grown – an indicator of brain development – Mr. Gard stood up and said: “I thought this was supposed to be independent.”

Both Chris and Charlie’s mother, Connie Yates, walked out of court.

Ms. Yates had told the judge she regularly measures her son’s head and disagreed with Great Ormond Street Hospital’s legal representation who said Charlie’s skull had not grown in three months, which would suggest a lack of brain function.

Mr. Justice Francis ordered an independent person to record the child’s head and report the measurement on Friday.

“It is absurd that the science of this case is being infected by the inability to measure a child’s skull,” he said. Court was adjourned for lunch and both Chris and Connie returned after the break.

At 2 pm local time, the court heard via a video link from New York, U.S., evidence from a medical professional. The American doctor said that from the scans of Charlie’s head, he saw no signs of structural brain damage.

Putting forward new evidence, the unnamed witness said that since April they have evaluated more data, and estimated the chance of success to be at least 10 per cent, referencing that of nine patients on ventilators, one is off and breathing independently. Additionally, there was an 11 to 56 per cent chance of clinically meaningful improvement in muscle strength.

Charlie has a rare genetic condition called mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome (MDDS). His fight for life has received high-profile support from President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, and the Pope.

Mr. Justice Francis, who made the initial High Court hearing, siding with the hospital in April, is reviewing evidence Thursday and Friday to determine whether baby Charlie can be released from Great Ormond Street Hospital to receive potentially life-saving treatment in the U.S.

Doctors have fought the parents through several courts for permission to withdraw his life support and be allowed to “die with dignity”, without Connie and Chris’s consent.

Catherine Glenn Foster, president and CEO of Americans United for Life, who is currently in London helping on the Charlie Gard case, said: “The medical evidence is consistently clear that Charlie deserves a chance at life. There is much misinformation about Charlie’s condition but he shows no signs of being in pain and experts say that alternative treatment has a chance of improving Charlie’s quality of life.

“It is unacceptable that Charlie’s parents are being asked to prove that their son’s life is still worth fighting for when it is their right as parents to pursue what they consider best for Charlie.”

Foster continued: “We have letters and invitations from Doctors and specialists from around the world and medical evidence that shows that Charlie could greatly benefit from this ground-breaking treatment. Charlie’s parents have been seeking this treatment since November – it is now July – time is of the essence.”

The hearing will continue on Friday.

    This is fucking ridiculous.

I really feel for those parents and it makes me very angry reading about this and thinking about if I was in their shoes.

    I'd probably kill someone.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

    Sad.

Charlie's life is SO worth fighting for. Bring Charlie to the US and treat him. Don't kill Charlie you assholes.

    God help his parents.

Between murdering (aborting) our children in the womb and murdering (euthanizing) our parents in their golden years then we've adopted an extremely disordered view of the value of life these days.

What I don't understand is why this hospital is digging its feet in so hard to prevent him from leaving to be treated elsewhere. You would think that they would do everything they could and if there's a small chance that he can be helped that they would be supportive.

They've already decided they can't treat him and that he's going to die so what's there to lose by letting him seek treatment elsewhere? I don't understand the resistance. They're not paying for it.

US doctor examines Charlie Gard to see if treatment can help

Charlie Gard's parents 'optimistic' after new brain scan and examination by US neurosurgeon

    18 July 2017 • 4:41pm

Charlie Gard’s parents remain "optimistic" following a brain scan that will determine whether he can have experimental therapy. The scan took place at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) where a US professor of neurosurgery examined the 11-month-old boy on Monday.

Prof Michio Hirano was studying the scan and other medical records before deciding whether he felt the boy could benefit from treatment for the rare mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome. He spent about four and a half hours inside the hospital on Monday.

The hospital said there was an honorary contract in place, meaning that for the duration of the visit Dr Hirano had the same rights as one of the hospital's own clinicians. He was also given full access to Charlie's medical records, and hospital and clinical facilities, including diagnostic images.

Dr Hirano was also given an opportunity to examine Charlie, according to the hospital. Meetings between the American neurosurgeon and other medical experts are due to continue on Tuesday.

Doctors from GOSH will meet with Prof Hirano to discuss the boy’s plight. The hospital believes Charlie has suffered irreversible brain damage and that life support should be switched off allowing him to "die with dignity". Charlie’s parents Chris Gard and Connie Yates say he should be given a chance of treatment. A source close to the parents said: “They remain optimistic after the scan.”

An EEG brain scan was conducted on Sunday, the first since March. Prof Hirano has said that the scan in March did not evidence of irreversible brain damage. The latest scan will be key to deciding Charlie’s fate. A High Court judge has already decided Charlie the ventilator keeping him alive be removed but could change his mind.

I have a hunch there's a decent amount of red tape for an international doctor to legally travel there and work, between immigration laws/visas, the NHS, and licensing.

    Probably right.

Do you think there's the same level of cap when these doctors go to Nigeria to treat an ebola outbreak?

It's different when a country wants all those people to come. They can just wave the paperwork. The government didn't want this boy to see that doctor.

Oh, and Africa/Ebola stuff is probably regulated by the UN or WHO.

I was reading somewhere that in EU or in this case the UK...it's a much different view than in the US in that, the patients rights are paramount...not the family or parents.

Basically...parent's don't get to make the decisions in case such as this. The hospital is taking the position on behalf of the suffering baby that he he should die with diginity.

That's their system. I may not agree with it but maybe this case will start to change that.

Charlie Gard dies in hospice, reports say

Charlie Gard, the critically ill British baby whose parents fought a highly publicized court battle to treat him with an experimental approach in the U.S., died on Friday in a hospice, The Daily Mail reported.

Gard's parents, after losing the court battle to bring him to the U.S. for the experimental treatment, then sought to bring Gard home to die; but Gard's parents were again opposed by the Great Ormand Street Hospital.

Eventually, the beleaguered couple conceded and allowed him to be moved to a hospice, where he spent his final hours.
