It was as much of a problem as the lyrics. It starts with the music, in fact.

Look I get it that you prefer Roth but 2004 was a disaster and a horrible year for the band.

That was not proper closure at all. Eddie smashing his guitars and trying to fist fight Val’s brother at the last show?

Appreciate your opinion but not fine. Not fine at all.

I'm glad I missed this disc and era entirely.

It is great guys like 1988 could get the remastered stuff for their favorite tunes and yes those Van Hagar records should be released properly. But overall 2004 was the worse from all involved. The worse creatively, the worse motives, and the worse behavior. Rehab for Edward and Alex sitting with a financial advisor would have been better in the end.

I appreciate the frustration of having an end of that era fall so short compared to what it was but it is still a better ending than the original 4 line u p which effectively ended with a photoshop cover, that's it. This band has never been sentimental to an extreme and it shows in how they end things.

I have to disagree with this. Strongly.

    Same here.

Feels So Good is epic compared to those 2004 tracks.

I'm not a huge fan of Feels So Good, Can't Stand Loving You or Not Enough, but they are at least well-written and well-performed songs. Those three tunes from BOBW are not.

I was very excited in 04 when I heard about this at first. I had no idea Ed was such a mess and I honestly thought they could be a functioning unit again. I remember when IAT was leaked on here, I was totally fired up at first. I burned it to a CD and probably listened to that song 100 times in a row. at around 25 I was thinking....this isn't as good as I thought it would be. I liked the intro with the "time, time, time, time" and I actually liked the guitar when the song kicked in. The drums sound ok when they kick in. The problem I started to have was that Ed does a lot of noodling but when he used to do it on something like Good Enough it worked, here it doesn't. When Sam sings the first go round of the "turn the clock back" it sounds OK but something is missing. listen to the second run through with Mike doing the backing vocals, it sounds SO MUCH better. it's not a good song for a lot of reasons.
I think Learning to See had the most potential but it's still a bit boring, I don't get the intro....it adds nothing to the song.
People will always bitch about UFB, I like the melody and I like some of the individual lines of the song but I get why people don't like and it is not a great song at all.
I honestly think Sam was foolish to think this would work and he was naive if he signed a contract under these conditions to produce new music. the songs were actually written in this order LTS, IAT and then UFB.....LTS is the best of the lot but we know it took weeks and weeks to record (remember this is the song that Ed ended up having to clamp the guitar to a bench or something to keep it in tune and all that stuff), I think-and this is not an excuse for Sam cause I really think he fucked up with this-but I think he just totally gave up mentally and said fuck it. Bad move by Sam but I don't think anyone on here would ever say that Al didn't see what was going on as well.
anyway the BOBW disks are pretty much the most boring assortment of songs ever on a best of. The just should have called it "songs that you've heard a million times on the radio-no deep cuts here so don't even look"
the remastered 5150 and OU812 were neat to hear but still

It wasn't just Sammy, it was everyone.

LTS is a clusterfuck, like Josephina would become.
A mish mash of unfocusd musical ideas.

UFB is just dreadful, worse than hair metal.
    Pedestrian/auto pilot music, imo.

My guess is Sammy wasn't inspired by it either, so he made
    up joke lyrics.

To go from those 1996 musical ideas to 2004, was a huge let down.

I remember the first time I heard It's About Time. I was mortified that Van Halen III hadn't taught my favorite band a lesson.

It was as if he was trying to emulate the sound of lame bands of that era like Limp Bizkit.
