IV I get, but I've never understood why II is rated so highly (again, in a relative sense, I still love it). I think I is much better, along with probably all the rest except for III and ITTOD.

Here are the top 10 reasons that LZ II is rated so highly:

    (1) Whole Lotta Love
    (2) What Is And What Should Never Be
    (3) The Lemon Song
    (4) Thank You
    (5) Heartbreaker
    (6) Living Loving Maid (She's Just A Woman)
    (7) Ramble On
    (8) Moby Dick
    (9) Bring It On Home
    (10) See numbers 1-9 above

"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth

"Political correctness is fascism pretending to be manners" - George Carlin

"Women and Children First ... The REAL Van Halen III"

You and I are normally on the same page (that was accidental!!) about stuff Coulda, but most of the other album track lists are better. Whole Lotta Love is by far the most overrated song in their catalog. It's fine but I've never gotten the fascination with it. Every single song on IV for example is far superior. It's not even a pimple on How Many More Times from the first album.

The Lemon Song has a 96 bar bass solo.

    4 Out on the Tiles
    5 Sick Again

    6 Dancing Days
    7 Whole Lotta Love
    8 Boogie With Stu
    9 Song Remains the Same
    10 Black Country Woman

Sorry but Four Sticks is repetitive garbage that goes nowhere, and the whiny, even for Plant, vocals on Battle of Evermore along with that annoying mandolin sink it like the Titanic. Whole Lotta Love is a great hard rock tune with as Noise said, a great groove, cool riff, and some typically kickass drumming from Bonzo.

I will say How Many More Times is possibly my all time favorite Zep tune, so we are in agreement on its awesomeness.

    "Houses" smokes IV, imo.

The songs are amazing: Song remains the same, Rain Song, Over the Hills, Dancing Days,
    No Quarter, THE OCEAN!

"The Ocean" blows Black Dog or Rock & Roll, into the weeds.
"The Ocean" is like hard rock perfection, and it's the last track!

"No Quarter" is so spooky, but my fave version is the live one from TSRTS.
Page's solo is so exotic & jazzy, he really was great.
The song is a masterpiece, reminds me of the month of October.

Physical Graffiti is the peak, though.
I think Houses & Graffiti are miles above IV and II.

II still sounds like a young, groovy band.

PG sounds like music made by majestic Kings.

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is great, but Houses Of The Holy is better...
“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

I think it's something about the actual sound of it and most of the others on II to me, I like the TSRTS version far better. I don't know, the sound of it on record to me has always sounded "clunky". It sounds like it was recorded in 1965 or something with the same sort of brittle flat sound of the early rock records, almost mono. In the same way that there's a drastic difference between the sound of I Can't Explain by The Who and everything from Tommy onward.

For some reason, Robert's vocal was sped up on the studio version of "Song remains the same."

I love Page's flashy, country type licks, over the top of the music.
The way it leads into Rain Song is really cool.
