As I was driving home from work today, "Bohemian Rapshody" came on the radio. It was the first time I had heard it in a while, and for some reason, the first thought I had was "Damn, this would have been a cool song for VH3 to cover, at least in concert".

It's no secret that Gary is a huge Queen/Freddie Mercury fan (hence, the obvious influence behind some of the "different" stage moves we saw in '98).

And with Mikey's background harmonies, Ed's guitar and Gary's very-Mercury-influenced singing style, I think Van Halen, version 3, could have kicked ass on this song.....

    Just a thought........

I would've liked to hear them cover Abba's 'Dancing Queen' with DLR or possibly, Cherone. I don't think Sam could have pulled it off.

I just think Ed could play the enire track with guitar with some awesome effects. The vocals would be excellent with DLR and Mikey - sort of in the same vein as "Dancing in the Streets".

I think if Gary could pull anything off it would be a Queen cover.

Well Gary has done plenty of Queen covers before, check out the medley Extreme play at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert back in 1992. I thought they did an awesome job and I`m a huge Queen fan.
Dunno about BoRhap though? Even Queen themselves couldn`t do the operatic bit live!!

You guys are forgetting. Queen used "4" part harmonies for that song and many other songs. I dont think VH in any form could have pulled off BR. Tie Your Mother Down possibly, or maybe even Keep Yourself Alive......

I don't think so either... even Queen pre-recorded the entire middle section of the song when done live.
I SURVIVED TEXAS LINKERS WEEKEND I, II, III, IV and VI and VII.barely made it to VIII time to slow down

Butch Walker covers Bohemian Rhasphody during his live shows and gets the whole audience involved during the operatic break. It's alot of fun and sounds great. I wonder why Queen never chose to try that live instead of playing a tape.

sorry for the long winded response...

VH could have pulled it off in their prime about 25 years ago, with a little help from overdubbing for the 4th part - Queen used overdubbing for the 4th part too, i believe... at least some of those parts are overdubbed in the middle of BR... i am not familiar with all their music...

dave, mike and ed harmonized fabulously together, for having 3 different and unique voices (with some tight arrangements too...) arguably the best 3 voice harmonies in hard rock music ever (i know VH is my favorite vocal sound)-

queen was ok at it- but that damn falsetto on the top line (was it brian may?) always gave it a cheap sound- the top voice should be the strongest voice- in VH, mike was the strongest... if the top voice is falsetto- it sounds cheap and fake (i.e. the beegees... although they still sold a lot of records...)

mike anthony is a true high tenor (and a damn good one at that) - so VH had much more natural, consonant sound... it was one of their signatures -one of the 3 main reasons (besides ed's guitar and dave) that Van Halen is still a legend and a household name among "non-musician kinda' fans" (if you know what i mean)- can't think of many other bands that did it besides VH and Queen in hard rock... my vote goes to VH for being the best at it though...

i'd actually be willing to participate in the arguement that VH layed down the best vocal recordings in the history of hard rock... (much more fun than sam vs. dave!) beatles may have them beat in regular rock- but i give VH a second even in that department...

I always thought the early Van Halen sound owed a lot to Queen. Check out "Stone Cold Crazy".

Jellyfish is a rarely heard of band that had some of the sweetest 4 part harmonies on stage that I can think of. They just released a 4 disc box set on Not Lame Records.

Not a bad idea. Personally, I'd love for them to cover 'One Vision'.
