We finally have a young rock band capable of selling some tickets and all we do is rip on them for sounding too much like a band people loved decades ago. Hell I'd love to see a band that sounded kind of like VH come out right now.

It's especially hard to claim when the audience for rock music is primarily white people. Black people don't even like the genre.

There is a hilarious emoji on the iPhone when you time in Van Halen of Dave dancing backwards with his assless chaps and Eddie on his left wailing away on guitar.

Origins, not ownership. Black people listened to rock music regularly up until the early seventies. according to Parliament-Funkadelic who would definitely know. Even in high school I saw black kids my age at shows. Not in the same numbers as whites and other races, but they were there. The current mayor of NYCís kids are metal heads.

Plenty of other examples too, man. From the Doobies to Prince to now. Thereís a festival called AfroPunk that showcases a lot of black rock bands too.

Sure, some bands come out of the gate fully formed, others don't.

I think the most apt comparisson would be Def Leppard, who started out very young, and as some may recall, were dogged as ACDC ripoffs for their first two albums.

Bono himself said he was mimicking Siouxsie Sioux on the first couple U2 records and I totally hear that. It took Aerosmith a few records to ditch the Stones comparrisons and find their legs (wings?).

Will GVF will find theirs? Who knows. Most of the all-too-derivative bands tend to go nowhere after a spiked interest in the novelty: Wolfmother, Kingdom Come, Airborne, Krokus...

But none of us are prophets. Give the kids a chance.

I was reading some of the posts in this thread yesterday, didn't have time to comment. I like GVF, I dig the Highway Tune. I know they sound like Zep but I'm ok with that. There were plenty of bands that went out of their way to sound like Zep back in the hairband days, I didn't mind it then and I don't mind it now. I just like the fact that there is a rock band out there that's getting some attention.

If you're going to copy someone, copy the best.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

A man's rights rests in three boxes: the ballot box, the jury box, and the cartridge box

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

    Because...

    1) Bruno primarily releases tunes with his own style/sound/vibe
    2) He isnít primarily identified as James Brown 2.0
    3) He pays homage to many artists/styles including Michael Jackson, Prince, The Police, etc. while maintaining his unique identity

    And most importantly...

    4) he has damn good songs. My band has four of his songs in our set list and theyíre consistently some of the most well receiced tunes.

Iíd love a new band that was heavily influenced by VH or Zeppelin...but who was uniquely identifiable and not defined as a clone of the original.

And I get all that. For the record, I like Bruno Mars and am told he puts on one hell of a show.

My point is that this isn't an easy of "getting away with it". GVF has a sound that is similar to that of Zep but they aren't a clone. For everything we can say they do the same they do something different. People have noted some of the looks and moves of the band. But if they were a clone would their lead singer have short black hair and be wearing ripped by t-shirts? The drummer sounds nothing like Bonham. They aren't the same band, the singer sounds like Plant. He could sing the fucking alphabet and it would sound something like Zeppelin just because that's his voice. But it's a hell of a voice.
