    Default Guitar magazines

Both editors of Guitar World & Guitar Player, were fired simultaneously, with
    seemingly no warning.

Michael Molenda & Jeff Kitts both posted their final editoral pages, both sounding
a bit shocked & very sad, but putting on a brave face.

I guess New Bay purchased both magazines & axed the top guys.

Curious to see what changes are in store, since i actively read both.

Print media is sliding into the abyss, hanging on on by bitten off finger nails.

I worked in newspaper advertising my entire career until I just got out of it recently. Print media is an almost dead industry. Very sad.

Yeah, it is sad, because i still love print.

It was depressing to see Guitar Player shrink in dimensions, with almost newspaper for pages.

Rolling Stone is unrecognizable this month.

It looks like a huge, glossy fashion mag.
I guess they are now monthly, instead of bi monthly and the cost went up to 9.99.

Brett, I've been trying to contact you to see if you wanted to post this one (GP, April '80), if I mail it to you.
I don't know how copyright laws work, but I'm willing to mail the photo copy of this entire interview to you, to de-ad or whatever, and post for all to see.

I was into these when I was a kid. Stuck with them thru the late 90's, but since then I hardly read them.
I've actually been wanting to get a subscription going again.

I love print too. Digital just aint the same. Plus, I like getting cool stuff in the mail.

As much as printed media in general, falling into the abyss, both Guitar Player, and Guitar World's fate was sealed years ago by their corporate entitie's oversight.
I was an avid reader of both from the early eighties on, and even dug back, and collected late 70's Guitar Player issues.

Both magazines in their heyday, we're great resources for players, novice, though professional.
One thing I absolutely loved about both were their uncompromisingly honest reviews of gear, current music, etc. As well as no holds barred interviews....not fanzine fluff pieces.
Hell..even back when I purchased my 5150 Blockletter, as much as I wanted one because of the sound, and obviously who played it...I still referred to Guitar World for their take on the amp.

They tested the hell out of it...gave very a very favourable review overall, but they did make note of some questionable attributes, that after I bought it, I wholeheartedly agreed with in hindsight.(nothing major...the kind of cheap feeling movement of the control pots, rather loud channel switchin when using the footswitch).

Fast forward a few short years, and these honest reviews went the way of the dodo.
Long gone were the pros and cons lists, replaced instead by manufacturer PR provided marketing copy, most of which was verbatim of the product catalog literature.

The artist interviews, particularly, in GW, had degenerated into the afformentioned fluff pieces...very little actual insight into the process, inspiration...instead, a more image, and PR based restrictive blurb focusing more on the generality of the final "product"..no longer a depthy introspective that I often found an endearing way to connect with a musician you enjoy on another level.

That said..yes...print in the form we know and love is dying, but even in its digital form, these two magazines among many others...or more the managrment/ownership running them have a lot to do with how defeatist and uninspired they present themselves.
And also...what they charge for the magazines in both paper and digital is appalling considering just how much the advertising to content ratio has shifted...even since the late 90's...and that's not even including the multi-page "review"/PR blurbs I mentioned earlier.

As much as I hate that conventional print has been affected by the digital age...content is content. Sadly it doesn't surprise me that these firings took place.
Both these guys fought the good fight...but it all comes down to dollars and cents to the multi media conglomerates.....There's very little commitment to the specific subject matter....just who pays the highest dollar to advertise, or promote.

    Sad.
