Why is nobody bringing up Ed Shaughnessy?

You can't play jazz without having technique or theory. Sure there are exceptions but rock is the dumbest music genre. Every other genre of music, technique is appreciated except with rock. Not discounting great drummers who veer into fusion a bit or progressive music but you have to immerse yourself in jazz to appreciate its complexities and to master it with your instrument. Take a guitarist like Alex Skolnik who was a beat on electric with rock. Had to quit and go to school to learn jazz. You simply just don't go "ok let me learn a few modes and go from there."

I was good enough to major in music in trumpet and did classical and jazz. Have done rock with guitar. Jazz is by far harder than any of them put together.
Just the chordal ideas alone, are staggering.
Then you add the phrasing underneath the chords, the scales that fit this obscure augmented
chordal pattern, and you try and make it all fit in bizarre time.

Rock is primarily 4/4, pentatonic based, mini barre chords, E & A.
It's great, but yes, primitive, overall.

Then listen to someone like Mike Stern, and all of those auto licks & positions,
    go out the window.

Shaughnessy and Joe Morello were two more great ones. Those duels on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson between Ed and Buddy Rich were legendary. There's never anything cool like that on late night tv anymore. It was always cool to see Buddy and Johnny trade quips, too. Buddy could be an ass, but he also had quick wit. Carson could play some drums, too.

I saw this guy back in February and was blown away. Zach Danziger was the opening act, which I thought was incredibly ballsy. His drums are small, yet he got an absolutely huge sound out of them. I thought, "I never saw John Bonham, but I'm seeing this guy!" Louis Cole.

Surprised no love for Animal. He probably influenced more kids to pick up the sticks than anyone else.
He was a monster player too.

Lol im going to bed, otherwise I'd find and post the video of Animal and Buddy dueling on the Muppet Show. I remember being so excited for that episode in the week leading up to it when I'd see the commercials for it. Cant remember what year that was, but i couldnt have been more than 6 or 7. Classic.
