My problem with Noel's book is that to me he comes off as a giant fucking douche.

Some interesting stories, but nothing more than RNR excess stories, or shit we already knew. Ed's insecurities, DLR trying to run the band but Ed and Al fighting him every inch of the way, all of them whacked out of their fucking gourds on coke, pussy everywhere. Been there, read that, got the t-shirt.

The only real enlightenment to me of Noel's book was that I knew they were dicks, I just didn't know they were THAT much of a bunch of pricks. How MA didn't fucking punch each one of them in the mouth multiple times I don't know.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Heavy drug-users tend to lose all sense of proportion, right? Every addict I've ever known is at the very least an unreasonable person while they are regularly using. Put them in the pressure-cooker of fame, complete with outsize and unfair expectations on the part of everybody, and enablers in every direction-- and Monk was an enabler, by his own description-- they also start to become abusive. So, to me, it's not a big shock that these guys acted out like that. It doesn't seem like this affected the naturally-passive Anthony nearly as much, but let's also remember that he was the member of the band who had to shoulder the least amount of the pressure. He was responsible for showing up and playing when he was needed, really, and I've never heard of him being an addict.

On the other hand, we've seen and heard many examples of all these guys being nice people when they weren't loaded-- even Monk says that-- and especially after they all got sober. Hagar has said many times that once AVH got sober, he stayed that way and became much more together. Even Roth comes off as wacky-but-decent, basically since his EMT stint; Valerie Bertinelli said that she was surprised at how much she had come to like Roth since the 2007 tour, and loved how he treated her son. And since he got on the wagon, EVH generally seems much happier.

None of this is to say they aren't dysfunctional, obviously-- speaking as a creative type myself, it's just so common to see weird behavior-- but I have a hard time believing they're as bad under more normal circumstances as Monk has made them out to be.
"There will always be a Holyfield or a Tyson, but there's only one Mohammad Ali. There will always be a new body building champion, but there's only one Arnold. And there's only one David Lee. I'm the fun in Van Halen, always will be." - David Lee Roth

I don't know how many times Monk repeats that EVH was "not too bright" - it gets annoying very quickly.

He gushes over his talent, though.
He really praises him as uber gifted & creative.

But i beg to differ with him on Ed not being too bright.
I remember reading the lost tapes/GP article, where it was a young Edward interviewed
    by Jas Obrect, around 1980.
Ed would phone Jas and shoot the shit, and Jas later shared these conversations.

I remember reading this stuff & being confused, because Ed was saying things like:

I thought up the variac idea in the club days, but realized i need to cut the voltage
to 46 ohms by way of the oscillator, but don't forget my tubes were positioned for 100 watts,
except by cutting the voltage to half, i realized i could process the sound of a full volume stack
    but with...

So i routed the pickup cavity, threw in a humbucker, and just figured out how to wire it...

The tremolo arm has to be positioned just so to keep it in tune.
When you go down, you bring it back up, but stabilize the spring with a chip and use
a lubricant at the nut, but not just any lubricant...you'll need to make a special recipe of...

He was just going on & on about all these brilliant ideas & tricks he had.
And i'm thinking, i would have no clue how to adjust a variac or rewire a makeshift routed humbucker
or keep a Fender tremolo in tune.

Some of the ideas he had, featured a warning from GP (Do not try this at home: You could risk electrocution).

    More than debatable.

Fires Uzis indiscriminately at neighbors' houses.
    Lies incessantly.
Routinely threatens roadies with physical harm.
    Occasionally racist and sexist.
Thinks he found a cure for cancer.
Doesn't remember any of the words to his songs.

Those facts are known. He could've have just related what he saw without making his own comments - let the reader decide who's bright and who's not.

I still don't think a dim bulb can both revolutionize the way guitars are played
    and built.

The guy has some over developed portions of his brain, that Monk could only dream of.

And some underdeveloped parts. Like the gray matter that thought photoshopping Mike off album covers was a good idea.

Hard to get dimmer than that in the entire history of VH. Including encoring with HMSI.
