    Default Noel Monk Speaketh

Some tidbits from his new interview in Rock Candy magazine (UK):

    On Van Halen fans:

Their demographic has gone from 15-25 year olds, to 50-75 year olds.
Their fans are all nostalgia freaks, these people want to relive their youth.
But they're all dedicating themselves to a band that peaked years ago.
    David can't jump anymore.
They look at him like that today, because they want their youth back.

    On Alex Van Halen:

Al was vicious. One of the most horrible people i've ever dealt with in
    the business. He was cruel.

    On Michael:

He never stood up for himself.
People called him the doormat of the band.
    They walked on him.
But Michael had a brilliant backup voice.

All these years later, Eddie, who is not too bright, is all
over Michael about not being the best bass player in the world.
I dont know whether he just wants his replacement to look good,
    or what.
    I really don't understand it.

    On Sammy:

    I don't talk about what i wasn't there for.
Unless i lived it, i don't talk about it.
I never met Sammy Hagar, but i rode the bus with Van Halen.
Now you get people who talk about stuff they weren't there for.

    On the US Festival:

Van Halen never did a bad show, except that one.
You pay us a million & a half for one show & of course, we're
    gonna screw it up.

    On Dave's critics:

They say, Well, David can't sing.
Well, he's a rock and roll singer- he doesn't need to go out
    and deliver an aria!

Nathan Roth was a great guy.
And he made all his own money, it wasn't passed down.
Dave never flaunted his money, either.

    Spit. Take.

Some of that, actually mostly all of that, is spot on, though I don't think Mike was a door mat. He was just quiet. Smart, with a buncha egomaniacs around him. He just wanted to play his boom stick. Still the heart of Van Halen, ol' Cannonmouth. We heart you, Mikey.

It's ALMOST as if Noel has read some threads here.

I like Noel and he makes it very clear, he was there & this is what he witnessed.
The interviewer brings up Sammy & he stops him and says, I cannot comment because i was out
by that point, and not there.

    I kinda respect that.

But he also seems genuinely hurt by Ed's dismissal of him.
He writes, i loved David, but i expected that from him.
    Al, i expected it.
    Eddie?
Never thought Ed would go along with it, and toss me under the bus.

A couple comments, i felt he was gunning for VH Rising & Renoff.

He always mentioned, "I was there, i lived it. Some of these other books..."

    I really enjoyed both books.

I'm not sure why EVERYONE has to be there, if they do a ton of research and
    talk to those that were.

Having said that, i really enjoyed Noel's perspective.

    Sounds about right.

A bunch of middle aged dudes clinging to their youth.

Amazing what assholes the VH guys are always portrayed as. Those guys really sound like shitty people.

Monk's book was way better and more valid. He literally was there. No hearsay. Just him telling it as he saw it, live, in person.

Rising is a boring hearsay archive that'd already been done a dozen times before.

I'm middle aged if I live to be 108.

Just because somebody is a world class musician, that doesn't make him a great human being.
