Both. EVH is the perfect example of "drive for show AND putt for dough." His lead playing is so amazing that his stellar rhythm playing often gets overlooked.

The beauty of Eddie Van Halen is that his rhythm playing and his lead playing are so interwoven sometimes it's hard to tell where one stops and the other starts. His rhythm playing has spurts of lead thrown in (without overdubs) that set him apart from other guitarists. All the while he keeps the beat moving in his hands and never loses it. At the same time, his lead playing can be almost syncopated where he weaves in and around the rhythm and compliments it in a seemingly effortless fashion.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Could any other guitarist have come up with this back in 1978?

Greatest rhythm player in rock n roll history. I say rock n roll because I'm also into thrash/metal and they have their own rhythm gods.

    Rhythm.

He is brilliant. VH II and Fair Warning show off that greatness. Almost funky.

As much as he is primarily praised for his revolutionary lead playing, I have to say it was really his rhythm playing that reeled me in originally. I had honestly never heard anything like it before. Panama and Hot for Teacher completely blew my mind when I first heard them, largely because of the riffs. And the more I try to learn Eddie's riffs, the more I find he uses a lot of chords that I don't hear a lot from his contemporaries. Plus he just has this ingenious way of making riffs that sound very complex, but when you figure out how they're played, you find that they're a lot easier to execute than they sound.

All of the above, but I'll have to go with the rhythm if pressed.

No more swing than this. But he blurs the line between rhythm and lead so much it's hard to tell.

    Both.

As a guitar player myself I was originally drawn in by his lead playing.

But as I've learned to play and tried to learn to play his songs, his rhythm playing is something that is unique to him. You can get close, but trying to play something like Beautiful Girls with his swing and get it right is an exercise in futility. You can come close, but you'll never get the exact feel of the original.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

I don't even think about his leads anymore. The solos are great, flashy, and unparalleled by most legends, save the possible exception of Stevie Ray.

But a finer rhythm guitarist in all of rock history, there is not.
