High Tide Music Festival October 6

    http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/...512-story.html

Sammy Hagar, at 70, still can't drive 55. Hard-rock vet to debut SoCal music, food and car festival in October

    George VargaContact Reporter
Considering how constantly busy he keeps as a musician and a multifaceted entrepreneur, it’s no surprise Sammy Hagar still can’t drive 55, to invoke the title of his hard-rocking 1984 hit.

A veteran solo star and the former lead singer and rhythm guitarist in the bands Van Halen and Montrose, Hagar is now at work on a new album he describes as being the most thoughtful and unhurried of his career. It includes songs about such unlikely topics as the Federal Reserve and the international monetary system.

The 70-year-old Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee is the leader of the band The Circle, which performs next Saturday, May 19, at Pala Casino Spa & Resort and teams him with ex-Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, one-time Led Zeppelin drummer Jason Bonham and lead guitarist Vic Johnson. (Ticket information appears at the conclusion of this article.)

Hagar is also doing periodic acoustic shows with Sammy & The Hagar Family Band, which features Johnson, Hagar’s wife, Kari, and their musician sons, Aaron and Andrew. (For now, at least, he’s keeping Chickenfoot — his band with Anthony, guitarist Joe Satriani and Red hot Chili Peppers’ drummer Chad Smith — on the back burner.)

Then there’s his Sammy's Beach Bar Rum and Santo Mezquila liquor lines, Sammy's Beach Bar & Grill and Cabo Wabo Cantina chains, El Paseo gourmet restaurant in Mill Valley, “Rock & Roll Road Trip with Sammy Hagar” AXS-TV series and “Sammy Hagar’s Top Rock Countdown” radio show.

So what’s left for Hagar, who a decade ago sold his Cabo Wabo Tequila line for just under $100 million?

How about a Southern California beach bash that will focus on three of his greatest passions — music, food and cars?

Just don’t call it Hagarchella or Sammypalooza.

“How about ‘Georgeapalooza’?” Hagar joked with his interviewer at the start of a recent phone conversation. Then he grew more serious.

“It’s going to be called the High Tide Music Festival. It will take place Oct. 6, right by the ocean, in Huntington Beach,” said Hagar, who grew up in the Inland Empire’s decidedly beach-free Fontana.

Like Cabo San Lucas in Huntington Beach

Sammy Hagar will host and perform at High Tide, a day-long festival in Huntington Beach, shortly before his 71st birthday in October. (Photo courtesy of Kampaign P.R.)
The vibe at High Tide will be similar to Hagar’s annual, star-studded birthday jam sessions in Cabo San Lucas at his Cabo Wabo Cantina, which he opened in 1990 by performing with Van Halen.

Similar, but outdoors, and bigger and more musically diverse.

“High Tide will be the same kind of thing I do in Cabo,” Hagar explained, speaking from his Mill Valley home.

“My friends will come jam with me and we’ll have a bunch of unannounced guests. We’ll also have an eclectic group of bands — SoCal reggae, folk, country, some rock and more. But it’s not a festival you can pin down as a classic-rock or alternative-rock fest. No. This is a World Music festival.”

    He laughed.

“It’s so crazy because it will also have a car show. All my friends and band members have colorful cars, as do I, so we’ll put them on display. And we’ll have a lot of food stands with food from my restaurants. So the festival will smell, taste and look like me, which is really a shame! But it has to have something with an identity.”

The lineup and ticket on-sale date for High Tide have not yet been announced.

Hagar had initially hoped to hold the event in Cabo San Lucas and met last year with representatives from Live Nation and AEG, the world’s two largest concert and festival producers. But logistics and finances proved too daunting to stage the event in that Mexican coastal city.

“The budget was up to $600,000 before I even had any talent booked to perform,” Hagar said. “So, then, we had idea to do it in America on the day before I leave for my annual October birthday gig in Cabo.”

High Tide will be held from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Hagar wants the event to grow organically. He said he’ll be happy whether the festival draws 8,000 people or 50,000. His approach to it is on a gut instinct basis, not as a business undertaking (“although my partners are,” he noted).

“The city of Huntington Beach is totally behind the festival,” Hagar enthused. “I won’t let bands play for an hour or an hour and a half. Everyone will play for 35 minutes. I’ll play longer, at the end, because I’ll have a lot of special guests, just like I do in Cabo. People will be able to jump in the ocean and still hear the music.

“When it’s done, I want people to think: ‘Hell, I want to do that again!’ My contribution will be the music, the food, the drinks, and what people experience. I think anybody who doesn’t like the beach has a problem!”

A rock star with a knack for business
Sammy Hagar is shown with Van Halen in 1993, three years before he was ousted from the band after more than a decade as its lead singer. From left are Michael Anthony, Hagar, Alex Van Halen and Eddie Van Halen. (AP file photo by Kevork Djansezian)
In March, Hagar sold his home on the Hawaiian island of Maui for $3.1 million. He bought his first properties — several California apartment buildings — in the mid-1970s after making several hit albums as the lead singer in the hard-rocking San Francisco band Montrose.

He soon opened a travel agency and co-founded Fire Chief Inc., which became the second-largest home fire sprinkler company in America. Then came a custom bike shop and his Red Rocker bike line, followed by an array of other ventures.

Did Hagar have even the slightest business inclinations as a student at Fontana High School in the 1960s?

“I just wanted to stay out of trouble and was trying to get a job, to make enough money to put gas in my car,” he replied.

“I really had no idea what would happen and I think about that all the time now. I never dreamed any of this. At some point, I thought: ‘Maybe I could be a rich and famous rock star.’ I thought that’s what I was in Montrose. I wasn’t rich or famous then, but I thought: ‘This is what it’s all about!’ I didn’t foresee becoming a solo artist, selling out arenas and stadiums, joining Van Halen, having No. 1 albums.

“But I am a dreamer. I also keep my nose to the grindstone and don’t look around too much. Next thing I know, I’ve done the work and I’m there. That’s been the story of my life. People ask: ‘How do you do as many things as you do?’ Well, my sleeves are always rolled up and I have my hard hat on. I wake up in the morning, I go to work and it’s not labor. It’s fun. I enjoy it. I figure things out. I’m just the luckiest guy in the world.”

    Another laugh.

“I haven’t got old, because I haven’t had time to get old!” he said. “Once I slow down, I’ll be like Rip Van Winkle.”

Hagar previously addressed his age in a 1995 Union-Tribune interview, when he was 47, an age then considered almost ancient by rock star standards.

“I’m going to be 48 and I’m proud of it,” he said at the time, adding: “There was a five-year period in my early 40s where I didn’t tell people how old I was. Now I’m proud of my age. I’m strong and I’m healthy.”

How does Hagar feel now, six months before his 71st birthday?

    He chortled.

“How could some 48-year-old punk kid think he was old and be proud of it? That guy needs to be slapped!” Hagar said, laughing again.

“Did I foresee, at 70 doing anything, much less everything? No. But I don’t know what age has got to do with it, unless you’re unhealthy. When I was growing up, man, my grandpa — when he was 60 — was done. He sat in a chair all day, smoked a pipe and bitched about everything. I’m out here at 70, trying to change eveyhing.

“I’m friends with Trť, the drummer in Green Day. He recently was tellling me that I’m ‘the youngest 70-year-old guy’ he’d ever met. I said: ‘How many 70-year-old guys do you know?’ And he said: ‘How many do you know with fresh ink?’ I got a new tattoo with the logo for my Santo Mezquila. I gotta advertise it, without being blalant, so I got a tattoo of the logo on my arm.”

Has the passing of time prompted Hagar to change the way he approaches performing? Indeed, it has.

“Now, I strongly consider not doing two shows in a row, just because I don’t want my voice to get messed up, or feel tired the next day and say: ‘Oh, man, my knees are killing me’,” Hagar noted.

“I don’t ever want to step on stage that way. Even as a young man, I’d wake up and my back was killing me my feet hurt from jumping off 20 feet (high) stage risers. But you just sucked it up and did it, because you wanted to do it so bad. You can call it pacing, but I don’t want to go out on stage with injuries.”

What about maintaining his singing voice?

“I sing in the car,” he said. “I scream at people. I yell at my kids and my dogs with that ‘Sammy Hagar voice’: Heyyyy! It actually keeps my voice in shape. When I do my radio shows, which I don’t do live — I’ll record 3 or 4 in one day — I yell and scream, on mic, and get myself all in shape.”

    Rags to riches
Sammy Hagar is wealthy now, but grew up "dirt-ass poor" in Fontana. (Photo by Randee St. Nicholas)
But it hasn’t been all smooth sailing for Hagar, who has described his family as “dirt-ass poor” when he was growing up.

Before joining Montrose in 1973, he struggled in a series of Southern California bands that went nowhere slowly. His singing career began after a failed attempt to make his living as a boxer.

In 1996, Hagar was fired from Van Halen, the band in which he had replaced David Lee Roth 11 years earlier.

In 2010, Hagar and several business partners were sued for nearly $590 million by a developer, after the swift demise of the Fresno branch of Hagar’s Cabo Wabo Cantina chain.

    What, then, inspires him more?

    Success?

    Or failure?

“That’s a good question,” he replied. “I gotta say: They both inspired me the same, and I’ll tell you why. My ex-manager Ed Leffler — who managed me for all of my career, until he died and I got thrown out of Van Halen — always said I was the only artist he knew whose success made me get better.

“Ed came from working with The Beatles, the Stones, the Osmonds, the Sweet, then me and Van Halen. He told me: ‘Most people’s success makes them lazy. You’re the only person I know whose success drives them.’ It’s true. I’m kind of like a junkie with success. It makes me feel real good, not in terms of ego, but satisfaction,

“And when failure hits, it’s the only thing that slows me down enough to make me think: ‘What am I doing?’ When I have failure, I slow down, and say: ‘What the f--- happened?’ I don’t like this.’ So it motivates me. I’m like an amoeba. If it gets too hot, I move to where it’s cold. If it gets too cold, I move to where it’s hot. I’m really lucky that way.”

It's called "No Worries" and it's available at Amazon (Probably ITunes too, but I have no time for ITunes).

As for the announcement, Sammy mentioned it years ago that he wanted to be a part of a huge rockfest. It's west coast, so I won't be there.

I'll give him a lot of credit on that. The Eagles do one cash grab tour after another. I was looking for tickets to this summer's tour and the cheap seats are $175.00. F that.
