    Default Gated communities

Can someone explain these to me? How do they work and how are they safer than regular areas?

I understand the basic concept that you can only get in by getting past the guarded gate but is the entire area zoned off, with spikes or something? Even if so, can't they be scaled by burglars who will go unseen as long as they're out of view of the guard?

What if your friends want to pop over and see if you're home - can they do that or does the guard have to have advance knowledge that they're coming over? And if criminals want in then isn't that easy enough - threaten or kill the guard?

Of course they're safer. I'm not sure criminals will want to try and hop a wall with a 60" TV on their backs. Walls work.

Put simply, it's the concept of path of least resistance. Sure, you can do bad shit in a gated community, but it's easier to do bad shit in a non-gated community.

    Default Gated communities

Most of our friends who live behind them have given us their guest code so we just drive up and push in the code. I mean I can give that code to anybody and anybody can get in. Not that I know any criminals. You have to really trust the person.

I guess it gives an air of safety and I think they do have patrols that drive around as well. Of course the burglar can scale the wall and stuff like that but itís also more work and more of a risk than just walking up to a house thatís not behind a gated area. I think itís definitely a bit of a deterrent at least.

The gated communities around here all have remote gates with a key pad for visitors. You live there you have a remote for the gate. You have guests coming over, you give them the code for the pad. They have cameras too so you can see who comes and goes.

Also, at least here, the community is responsible for their water, sewer and roads infrastructure.

I wouldn't move in to a gated community unless it had a moat.

Doesn't add to the conversation any but I wanted to throw it out there anyway.

I'd rather just have a lot of acres for privacy/safety. Give me land over gates

Would you say gated communities are much safer - and an attractive proposition to many - or just a token gesture?
Are they aimed at everyone or the retired?
Are they just a collection of streets/a development like Cuesta Verde or entire towns with their own parks and shops?
Are they everywhere or just certain places like So Cal?
Are they primarily in high-crime areas?
Does it cost more to live in one than a non-gated community?

    Thx

As a general rule, if you live in a gated community, you're doing pretty well in life.

A huge downside to gated communities are home owners associations and their fees which typically dictate what you can and can't do to your home and landscape. Things like you can't add solar panels to your roof, what color you can paint your house, what kind of grass you can have on your lawn and usually much more intrusive details that include fines for violations such as barking dogs and street parking during evening hours. The worst part is, usually there's a few residents on the neighborhood HOA board who are power tripping assholes or the property developers that use their position to profite from fees and generally make life miserable for some in these communities.

I fucking hate neighbors so that's my approach for my primary residence. I'm an odd duck and when idiots get in my business I just want to hit em w a shovel. I have friends in subdivisions who get hit w chit chat in their driveways etc. ... ugh I'd be a frequent shopper at lowes.

Gated are safer but essentially a nice subdivision so really comes down to what works for you. Like an ultra secure building in a city gated community in suburbs usually a bit more per square foot. If your thing worth it. If me bring a shitload of shovels

Theyíre usually in the better areas because theyíre expensive but most places here have gated communities. You pay very high homeowners association fees monthly to live in a gated community, and there are usually other things that go with it like thereís probably a community pool and other stuff like landscaping. Itís expensive. I happen to live in a city with a lot of them here in So Cal.

    Whatís Cuesta Verde?

Theyíre are usually big developments if that means anything. Itís just homes itís not stores or retail and stuff like that no. But they may have a community pool and park as I mentioned before. Theyíre not aimed at the retired or those on fixed incomes no. We have separate retirement communities as well.

Personally Iíd rather spend the money to have a bigger house and a nice area than live in a gated community. I donít see the real benefit other than it costing a lot more fucking money. If you live in a safe city it doesnít even matter.
