Just perusing the new December 2000 issue of Vintage Guitar Magazine. Inside is an interview with Danny Kortchmar. A little news is good news! I quote...

VG: You're working with Van Halen right now, right?

Kootch: Yeah, I'm producing them. Eddie is the most incredible guitar player you can ever imagine. He's his own effects pedal. He has so many moves and things he does. You think he's tapping, he isn't tapping. You think he's doing slides, well, you never know what he's doing. You think he's using the whammy bar, and he's not. He's doing it with his fingers. Then he'll use the whammy bar for something else. It's constatntly flowing. He has a brass pick he plays with. It's serrated on one side, it's a mess. It's handmade. He does things with it. He scrapes and rubs, he changes positions with it. He holds it between his thumb and his forefinger and then thumb and middle finger. It's constantly switching, changing, and moving. It's ridiculous! I've never seen anyone with the articulation this guy has. He cranks his amp up way up loud, so that if you or I played it, it'd be all over the place. But he just gets such articulation out of it. Every note is clear. It's amazing what this guy can do! Plus, he grooves like mad, which a lot of people don't know about.
Eddie has absolutely nothing in common with his imitators, all of whom are a bunch of showoff idiots. He's the only one of those guys who does it with style, and humor, and soul, and with swing. In my opinion, he's just a million miles away from the batch of imitators he has.

Anyway, I thought that Danny saying he is producing VH is, at least, a good sign that all is still going.

    Peace

How recent is that interview? One rumour months ago was that Kortchmar persuaded the VH brothers to bring back Dave who promptly had Kortchmar sacked.

Billy Joel has a video out that is the making of one of his albums that Danny produced, I think it is River of Dreams(not a big Billy Joel). Pretty good documentary. Danny was producing the record they were making with Gary in 99, I think it would be great if he did end up working with them. He also has worked a lot with Henley.

Would be very interesting to find out when this int was conducted?? They wouldn't put a year old interview in the new issue would they?

Danny has also Produced AND played guitar on some of Don Henley's solo albums...

Kootch is actually a decent guitarist in his own right. (though no Eddie Van Halen...LOL)

Seems kind of unethical of them to taunt us by putting an old interview in a new magazine though

Well, regardless of the age of the interview, it was cool to hear that Ed is still blowing away the competition (if there ever was any) with his unique style and experimentation. I love to read about how he gets those wild sounds (and I don't know a damn thing about guitars or music)!

Danny is a good guitar-player and has played since with Don Henley, Jackson Browne, Dan Fogelberg, James Taylor and west-coast songwriters.
He's indeed a good producer and composer friends

Kootch said it all there, and then some. I'll have to give that issue a look.
