All good. I bought WACF when I was 16 and OU812 when I was 24. My maturity probably peaked at 14, so that explains a lot.

    Cool.
A buddy brought me a cassette of WACF and (I wanna say VH II) another one, from Taiwan when I was about 13 or 14. My mom bought me the OU812 cassette on release day when I was 16.

High school. Girls. Beers. Guitars. Eddie. Cabo Wabo.
    Sold!!!.

We were driving to the Monsters of Rock thing, and my buddy was like:
Throw it on, man, NEW HALEN! Blast the fucker!

There were five of us, and OU812 was inserted, and we all listened quietly.

I think we made it up to the midway point of Cabo Wabo, and the older kid
    driving, said: Fuck this!

Swear to God, he ejected the tape & threw on WACF.

    Everyone onboard went, "YEEEAAAHHHHH!!!!"

But i've since grown to appreciate OU812, maybe because it reminds me of those
    days.

OU812 is probably their most diverse album with Sammy. It definitely has its moments.

OU812 has its gems! Good album. 812 was like any other album for me. It had Ed and Al playing! Not to take anything away from Mike or Sam, it was new music that was going a newer direction for VH. I accepted Ed had matured musically and was happy just to have a new VH album.

I guess back then, we weren't looking for diverse.

We wanted to be pummeled by Ed's unrestrained virtuosity, Al's powerful octoban blast,
Dave's conversational/coolest dude in the room vibe, Mike's incredible backing vocals & Kody's
no frills, ass shaking tambourine skills.

I still OU812 was sequenced wrong.

Open that record with AFU, followed by the single, Black & Blue.
Save the keyboard stuff for later in the album, especially When it's love.

Like I said, I was 16 in '88. Farthest thing from mature, and often feel that way now at almost 46!

I just loved the music. No bias. No agenda. No bullsh*t. I was having fun and so were VH. Not to say they or I didn't before or haven't since, just that there where no 'rules' back then or line in the sand mentality. Even as a teenager, I would've said "F*ck that... I'll listen to whatever I want!" And did.

OU812 definitely would have benefitted from the low end production of WACF. Mike's bass on OU812 is as thin as Calista Flockhart on Jenny Craig. The diet, not the actual Jenny Craig.

To me, WACF (and VHII to be honest) sounds like glorified demos as opposed to studio. That might sound harsh, yet not intentional in terms of trying to kick sand on anyone's blanket.

Just as early Zep, Sabbath, Ozzy solo etc. albums have a lo-fi sound, almost 'thin' to my ears. No to piss on the songs, writing or playing! I prefer the production to The Ultimate Sin or No More Tears, to Blizzard of Oz. Same goes for Whitesnake ('87) to Slide it In etc. Or Slippery When Wet rather than 7800 F.

Even though OU812 is thin by VH production standards, I prefer its sheen and vibe over WACF. Part nostalgia, part liking a more polished product, part just digging the songs.

To me, Van Halen I and Fair Warning have the best production of the VH albums and Diary Of A Madman has the best of the Ozzy albums.
