Talking DTNA Cover - Yes I found some time to do a video!

I kind of took a break from doing videos, I was getting burned out on them. But the other day I was goofing around and felt like doing one so I recorded "Dance The Night Away." I used a backing track that is pretty good from karaoke-version.com, but there really is no replacing what Dave does vocally on this song. Anyway, I used Guitar Rig 5 for the tone and Logic Pro X to record it. I had a hard time finding a plate reverb for the right channel, they all sounded kinda harsh, but I went with this one just because I got tired of tweaking it! I had a bitch of a time doing all those tapped harmonics well, I must have recorded those a million times to get them as clean as I could. The main break isn't hard but man, getting those taps in the chorus to ring still is a pain after all these years.

That was pretty spot on and nice tone. I like how you had that little window up top where you're showing the tapping part of it as well. Most vids omit that part of the song. You know what I mean.

Default DTNA Cover - Yes I found some time to do a video!

Thanks man. Most people just donít them when they do this song, they just throw a few in like Ed does live in to their main rhythm track, which isnít exactly the notes he plays on the recording.

Nice job man. Sounds great! I too love the tapped harmonics (just genius and so musical). I never get tired of hearing this song. You did it justice.

    Very cool!
Such a great song, and you played it really well. Nice touch by using the Bee replica.
Love the harmonics, as others said. Neat stuff all around.

Funny quirk of mine - When doing the chordal tapped harmonics during the breakdown, I use and angle my middle finger instead of my index (while holding the pick between my thumb and index), but when doing single note tapped harmonics I 'cup' the pick in the 1st & 2nd joints of my middle finger and tap with my index... Haha.

    Thanks guys!

Doing the breakdown of that song is the only time I donít cup the pick inside my middle finger when Iím tapping just because obviously I need my first finger. I canít imagine using my middle finger there wow. You can kind of see I was having a hard time getting the pick back out of my mouth because Iím not used to doing that and I even had to spin it around at the beginning of the last chorus.

Like I said, it's a quirk of mine...
If I recall right, I first got the idea from seeing Vai tap those kinds of triad harmonics with his middle finger. I just seem to have more strength in that one and have no problem with the quick release needed to get those note clusters out.

But using the middle finger to tap 'normally' or do single harmonics feels weird to me. Go figure? Plus when I do regular tapped licks, I usually have the pick 'cupped' in the middle finger and anchor my thumb on the top of the fretboard and my pinky on the underside - in most cases.

Not to derail... Great video of DTNA!

That guys doing Dave is having a hard time, but I ain't gonna judge. I said in another thread we tried to do this one, and I couldn't make it sound even decent. Really tough song to sing.

    And not very well.

    Thanks man!

So I got a lot going on. I'm actually using the Plex amp, with the Cat distortion box in front of it (I found it to be key to the sound), and I have it eq'd with a pretty wide mid-boost. I'm also using a combination of the 4 x 12" 60's and 80's UK cabs with one mic on axis and one off axis...both are 57's. I'm also using the Quad Delay to try to emulate the slapback Ed has on that song. Any other processing like reverb I did with Logic.

Oh also in Logic, I did EQ it a bit more to get it a little warmer and put a multipressor on it as well, but that was to get it to fit into the mix more than anything. Obviously if I was just jamming with it, I wouldn't worry about that stuff.

Probably more info than you wanted, but you got it.

That's pretty awesome! Totally nailed my favorite VH song! The tone sounded perfect to me and the harmonic parts were spot on.

I noticed I play that B chord fill thing wrong. I've been playing an F# pull off to the open E followed by the B bar/triad. Oh well...I'm committed to that now.

It's a song that people don't realize is hard to sing until they try it.
