    Default Just a Gigalo!

Played this on the tube at the gym today. Must have had it on the 80's station. Such a goofy, fun video by Dave. I catch the original on Sirius every now and then on the oldies channel. Dave was actually pretty faithful to that version.

In retrospect, it would have been better for VH if that EP had flopped.

Who knows. I really think it was a good effort by Dave to get some of the goofiness out of him prior to the next VH album. Pretty Woman is one thing, Ed would have never gone for California girls or just a Gigalo. Dave was ready to go back to guitar-driven music. That band was just destined to implode. IMO.

I think things played out exactly as they were meant to....
VH did fine, and so did Dave. At least out of the gate and for a few years afterward. I liked some of Roth's solo EP stuff at the time. Not sure that Ed or the guys would've or wanted to put up with the persona for much longer?

But regardless, I thought Dave's solo career (for a while) was fun and funny stuff, with some cool music. I loved the videos! Having said that, some of my favorite tunes by him are ones like Damn Good, Tell the Truth, etc.... I like the more 'mature' stuff as well as the 'rock out with your cock out' material. And VH also did that sort of growing up angle very well with Sammy in a few of their collaborations.

I think that record and the videos, especially, are awesome. Along with the Cars and the Go Go's that is some spring/summer driving music, for sure. I've got two copies, one that was at Best Buy for cheap, and a Japanese version that's still in the wrapper. "Coconut Grove" is an all-time favorite.

Dave did a great job with this tune. I remember that video being played all the time after it was released.

Kind of amazing how such a straight up cover of a Louis Prima song could have been a hit in 1985.
Without MTV, I doubt very many people would have ever heard it.

Dave was one of the biggest stars on the planet at the time, I think we sometimes forget (me included) how fucking huge him and VH were.

I must admit that I was big into Dave at that time. That EP was a must and I wore it out.

I like the two songs that weren't singles the best from the EP. I think some of the best singing of DLR's career is on Easy Street.

And Coconut Grove sets such a mood, great tune.

Me too, he is a much better singer when he tones it down.
